I stopped partitioning drives many years ago. There are 2 major problems with doing it.
1. When you guess wrong on how big a partion should be for lets say pictures, there is not good way to increase the size unless you repartion all of them or save some space to add on at a later time. Much much better to just let them grow within one huge drive.
2. If you decide to start installing programs on a partitioned drive, you cannot move that program without screwing up the registry when the programs use that to point to files. There is a way around that, but then you better have the registry backed up.
And even when you are done, you won't gave gained much of anything as there is still only one hard drive and the spin and find time is still there.

Tried some of your suggestions: Disk clean-up, eliminate temporary files, and used CCleaner. Laptop works like a champ now !

Thanks for the ideas...

I'm facing the same issues. We each have our own portable now - so I am maintaining 4 PC's. Slow boot and random wacky behavior seems to get more common with age.

I would consider a data backup and re-load on the oldest one, but I don't think that Dell gave me a copy of XP and the drivers? They just loaded XP as shipped. Can I download XP from Dell or call them and beg? Or was I supposed to have imaged the PC myself when I got it...

I just installed and ran the ccleaner and it found 244 problems. I told it to repair them and it went as far as repairing 8 of them and than it told me if I wanted to repair the rest of them I needed to buy the full version, $35. I really dont want to do that at this time.
Is there another way to repair these problems without buying the full version??
Another program maybe?
Thanks very much!
Roy

Where these problems under "Registry Integrity" ?

Can you post a list of the items not able to remove ?

Usually free registry fix tools only remove problems from 4 or 5 areas and you have to purchase the full edition to remove other areas. A lot of times all items really do not have to be removed.

Word of warning messing with the registry is not for the faint of heart as removing the wrong registry item can break your favorite programs or worse prevent your computer from booting all together.

I really dont remember what area's where affected but I do know it was in the first two area's that were checked for scanning.
If messing with the registry could be a bad thing I might just leave well enough alone.
Thanks,
Roy

Try 'WinPatrol' it is freeware and with it you can manage your start up programs which can slow you boot up time. You can delay and disable programs at start up. It works great for me....also CCleaner (Free) works just as well if not better than Registry Mechanic ( not free). Both these help speed up my boot up time.
