When one tank of propane runs out, does it automatically switch over to the other or how does that work? I know there is a valve-like thing with an arrow pointing to a certain tank. If anyone could please explain to me the process to change from one tank to the other I would appreciate it. Thanks..

Yes, it will automatically switch over to the other tank if both tank valves are open.
I have stopped using the auto feature because I ran out on both tanks once. You need to check on them often and sometimes you use more fuel than others. I now leave one tank closed and use one until empty switching the tanks manually. I take the empty one in to fill as soon as I switch tanks.
LP Regulator
The regulator is the heart of the LP system. LP gas is under high pressure in the bottle and the regulator reduces this pressure to allow safe use with the appliances in recreational vehicles.
The lower pressure is distributed to the appliances. The arrow on the automatic gas regulator will always point to the gas bottle in service. When the red flag appears in the inspection glass, this indicates that bottle is empty. In systems without automatic changeover, the arrow should be then turned toward the other bottle and the empty filled as soon as possible.
I just changed/filled my tanks today. You have been told correctly, if you have the auto changeover valve and leave both tanks open the system will draw from the tank the lever is pointing towards. When that tank is empty the valve will show red and start drawing from the other tank, when you see the red you flip the valve to the other tank and if it has gas in it, it should go back to green. This allows you to fill the other tank and put it back inline with the valve open. I hope this makes sense to you.

Follow-up: I went out and checked my tanks. I don't have anything special; just two tanks, two hoses leading to one grey metal round thing. Do I need an auto changeover thing or do those tank indicator sticker things work???
