How often should I change the air filter in my truck to optimize gas mileage. Is once a year good enough??

That depends on what type of driving you do. If you can see dirt on the filter, I smack it on the driveway and then blow air from the inside of the element out.
I do this a few times a year or until the filter doesn't get clean any more.
If I go camping with the PUP into the boonies on dirt roads, this maintenance gets done more often.
Now this service intravel is much longer than the local Jiffy Lube that thinks my filter should be changed at every 3,000-mile oil-change!

I remember one time when my local Jiffy-Lube type of place suggested I have the automatic transmission fluid flushed and changed. I said sure, go ahead and do it.
When I got the bill, I took them out to my truck and asked them where that transmission dip-stick and pan-filter was since I HAVE A MANUAL TRANNY!!!!!

A Filter Minder can pay for itself by avoiding unnecessary filter changes.

You better check and make sure that you still have coolant in the radiator and not ATF!!!!

I have a K&N high flow filter and the book says every 100,000.

Once a year is fine for paper filters.
