Kangaair is right. I owned a '98 Dodge Cummins with 4.10 and 5spd. It would do the same thing in reverse or forward if I launched in 1st towing our 5th wheel and didn't give it any throttle when I let the clutch out. I always tried to slip the clutch as little as possible but, at 80k plus miles, the clutch was worn and chattered. Spring wrap up in reverse was always a balance of throttle and clutch. Same with my '94 Ford gasser 5spd. My '84 Isuzu diesel 5spd 4.10 had the original clutch at 288k miles when I traded it. I probably could have slipped the clutch a little more and got away with it...

I had the same problem with my truck and replaced the clutch only to still have the same problem. Mine ended up being a tired left leg . After paying more attention after the expensive new clutch, I noticed that when I released the clutch in reverse, my left leg would shake a little. Once the bouncing started, my leg would amplify the problem by bouncing the clutch pedal while backing uphill into the driveway. I solved the problem, by resting my left heel on the floorboard while actuating the clutch with my upper foot/toes. Now when I notice the truck starting to shake, I simply lower my foot to the carpet and all is well. I sure wish I had discovered that before the clutch replacement.
Back up in 4 wheel low but don't lock the hubs, this will allow you to make sharper turns.
If you end up getting a clutch get a good one like Luke or Southbend, and you will see a huge difference.

Family of 4 saved by Grace!!! MY TRUCK OUR TRAILER
So far no one has mentioned or asked what kind of surface the tires are on. My truck will bounce in reverse as the tires make and break traction . This doesn't happen on concrete or asphalt just on the dirt/rock roads found in alleys or campgrounds, especially if it is a bit of an uphill backing maneuver.
My solution is to put the truck into 4 Lo and let all the tires move the rig rather than depending on just the rear tires doing all the work.

4x4 on good traction conditions is NOT a good idea, especially when
turning in a tight radius.
Unlocking the hubs is the best way when on good traction conditions.
Your U-Joints will appreciate that...

claybird wrote: Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond! It looks like it is more than likely clutch chatter. I've also spoke with some local mechanics who agree. It seems like this is a fairly common issue. I did try backing up a hill in 4 wheel low and that solved the problem, but I can't turn as sharp. Will be taking the family for our maiden trip this weekend (even with $4.70 diesel), can't wait!
thanks
Sounds like you figured it out. That low range is handy. Have fun
