As the others have said, there is constant climate change. As for whether humans/internal combustion engines have caused it, I doubt it. But if you want to see where all the hand wringing and gnashing of the teeth eminates, just follow the money trail. Who stands to gain from selling Carbon Offsets, etc.. Sort of like a funnel, gets pretty skinny quickly.

I think that is due to the nature of "news" today (if it bleeds, it leads). Which headline do you think will get more people to read (buy) the news source:

"Sea Levels Will Rise Up To 20 Feet In The Future!"

or:

"Sea Levels Could Remain Constant!"

Note that both headlines are based on the same scientific article.

How can that be?

The research article quoted by the newspaper indicated that models show a sea level rise of about 1" every decade +/- 2" per decade. So given the uncertainties and enough time, the sea levels could increase by 20 feet OR they could stay just the same as they are now.

Note that the example above is based on an actual incident, with the names and bits of data changed to protect the innocent (and quite ticked off) scientist who wrote the scientific article and was "quoted" by the newspaper...

(snip)
Typically, many of my generation prefer to live comfortably in the past and doesn't like to have their beliefs shaken.

Although I've been able to research the pros and cons of global warming without adding to the hysteria it invokes, I'd like to find something that I could show to others that would allow them to make a rational decision as to whether or not it exists. I'm not looking for something to argue about (i.e., the alien at Area 51), rather a primer on global warming that would allow one to decide whether or not to believe established (rather recently, obviously) facts. It would be great if this site wasn't self-serving, but rather stated both sides of the argument with rationale for both.

after reading some of the responses I see your point. Not much intelligent/scientific type info on this web. I've googled and found many science type webs (none righties or other fringe groups) from many different countries and organizations. If you have high speed net service you will have many more webs to search than my slow dial. up can open.

The "follow the money" mantra leads to such places as Exxon/Mobil, Chevron/Texaco, Shell, BP, Citgo, Aramco, etc. Is that really where you want people to go?

BTW, Shell and BP play both sides of the street. They manufacture solar panels.

OK, let's change the parameters just a bit; Follow the government grant money, see where IT leads.

Why does everyone consider global warming to be some disaster? I am looking forward to it.

I can see myself in about twenty years, on some warm tropical beachfront boondocking spot in my RV -- somewhere along the balmy Greenland coast.

Is that like the tax breaks to the comapnys mentioned? (Ok, only the US ones.) How about the private industry grant money?

The oil companies and coal companies have paid for a lot of work in this area as, they, of course, have a lot to lose. Not surprisingly, the work they paid for either says "not a problem" or "we didn't do it." Similar to the outcome paid for by the tobacco companies.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not 100% sure that it is caused by the burning of fossil fuels, but I've never known an environmentalist to get rich from being an environmentalist. I can't say the same for CEOs.

Nothing can be done one way or the other to effect the earth's climate. --There's better things to do with your time. Like making money, and enjoying life.
