If you workcamp in lets say 3 states during the year, do you have to file and pay taxes in all 3 states?

If the states that you worked in have a State Tax, the Governor will certainly want his cut.
Back when I was a student going to school in Florida, I worked in Florida while attending college, then worked back in Massachusetts while home for the Summer.
Good luck
I changed my residency over to FL after getting a letter from MA saying I owed taxes on the money I earned in FL because MA was unable to withhold taxes from my lowly FL paychecks.
I ended up staying in FL after college and never regretted leaving MA (Taxachussetts).

It can get very complicated, depending on each states tax code. An extreme example is California, which we will not workamp in because of their tax code. In CA, they tax you on your total income, not just money earned in CA, regardless of your legal residence, for every month worked in their Golden State. In PA and most other states, it is just income earned in that state and in some states like FL, TX, NV and a couple of others there is no income tax. Yes, you have to file in each state that has an income tax.

we are residents of livingston, tx now ...........but worked in california and oregon last year.........filed in both....not really very painful.......but we noticed the withholding was very accurate in both and got money back in both......one was $5 and one was in the teens.....donated it back to the state wildlife program in oregon.....bought an gallon or 2 of gas with the other.....hahahahaah
it isn't as scarey as people seem to make it sound.....the way we did it was get a form and fill it out using numbers you expect to make....see how it turns out and then adjust your withholding.....we let it ride at our real exemptions married and 2 and both worked out fine. the people that have to be careful in california are residents who are on a state retirement.... but it looks pretty fair for non-residents......and I don't mind paying my fair share for where I am....shoot I payed $108 for a non-resident fishing lic. in calif....and more in oregon for lic. and tags.......it's fair.

We don't workamp, but do work on the road. We file our taxes electronically online without any problems. Refunds or debits go into or out of our Bank acct.
Usually we file in 3 states every year. This year so far will be VA, WV and AL. Last year was VA, MD and GA. Can't wait to get sent back to FL so we don't have to pay state income tax.

So it looks like it might be a good idea to research the different states and select where you are going to workcamp with some care and consideration.

You will owe state income tax in each state where you work/reside. Almost every state presumes residence while you are working in that state, no matter what you have done to establish domicile elsewhere.
Some states will tax the income earned in that state.
Some states will tax the income you received while living in that state.
Some states will tax your total income, proportioned your period of residence in that state.
Some states will tax income paid from sources in that state, although the work location was out of the state or even outside the U.S.
I've found it useful at tax filing time to have a day to day log of where I have been, and whether or not I worked that day. Any less information, state tax authorities may be pretty free with their presumptions.

We are traveling, working fulltimers. We file a state income tax in whatever state we work in. We do it online. We haven't had any problems & it's not that complicated. If you want to visit & work in a certain state just do it...life is short. I hope you don't miss out on visiting a state over fear of taxes. We personally think California is a wonderful, beautiful state as do many millions of other people. We do not stay away from any state over paying our fair share of taxes. All states get the taxes they need in one way or another.
