I have a 2006 Daman Challenger with the original in dash radio. The performance is poor especially in the AM mode. There is a lot of static on the AM mode. Also you can here clicking noise on the radio from the wipers again in AM mode. I am also wondering if part of the reason for the poor reception is the antennae installation. The antennae is mounted on the side up front above the drivers window. It lies horizontal just below the roof line. Has anybody replaced this antennae and improved the performance? Or do I need to just get rid of this original radio?

people actually try to use AM radios while travelling???

Basically there isn't much that can be done to clear up the noise except if you turn off the engine and wipers.

While you can toss parts at it, AM just by its very nature is going to pick up noise from engine (ignition), DC brush motors (wipers, fan, starter). Only VERY strong CLOSE stations may have enough signal to over come the noise.

Even replacing with a high quality aftermarket radio may not help, many manufacturers only include AM as an after thought.

Funny, I've been doing just that "listening to AM" on the road for 35 years with very few problems with "internal" noise on OEM stock radios. Normally while traveling at night (how I travel mostly) I listen to AM 1040 KNX news radio out of Los Angeles as this is still a 50,000 watt "Clear Channel" station. I can normally pick it up between the north and south boarders of the States anywhere west of St Louis. Yes, it does fade and is little "fuzzy" at times but, I've never had a static "problem" with the OEM radio that wasn't a bad connection in the power/ground or antenna circuits on the vehicle.

I have absolutely no am noise on my OEM installed radio.
All my OEM installed radios have been am noise free.
But every time I have replaced an OEM radio, for some reason
the am side has been a static noisy disaster. And no amount
of filtering has ever corrected it either. So I don't replace
radios unless they quit playing.

Thanks for all the info. I will just make sure all connections (ground, antenna) are all in good working condition.
