Does any bring along a portable ice maker in the PUP?
A member of one of my camping clubs let the group know about a sale of Emerson Portable Ice Maker from $139 to $109 at Target.
http://www.target.com/Emerson-Portable-Ice-Maker/dp/B0014DZ2YG/sr=1-6/qid=1214777358/ref=sr_1_6/602-0149915-4955057?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Aice%20maker&page=1
I had spent $21 on a week's trip and thought it was a great idea.
I bought one yesterday and plugged it in today. It is 12x15x15 and about 30#. It holds 3 qts and really pumps out the ice. It's actually very attractive with a SS look.
The thing is that is smells a bit and the smell was overpowering the first couple of hours, but it is better know. The noise is not too bad, but again, it's in our big kitchen so noise & smell will be different in the PUP.
I would only run it during the day. It has a small ice bucket and stops making ice when that gets full, so I may just have to run it when we are there.
Having doubts right now, but the idea of not having to worry about where and when to get ice is very appealing.
What do ya'll think?
It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature's gifts, the joys and beauties of the outdoors will be here forever.

Also remember it's an ice maker, not an ice storage device. The catch pan is not insulated. So yes you need to be there to empty it or the cubes will melt and get recyled.

I am curious as to how long it takes to fill the small bucket of ice with the Emerson? Also what size ice cubes does it make. Standard size or mini cubes?
I want to leave this earth quietly in my sleep like my grandfather and not like the hysterical, screaming passengers riding in granddad's RV just before the big crash.

We have had ours for a long time, I paid close to $200 when I bought and it was worth every cent. Have never had any smell out of ours. It makes a good size ice cube. I will never be without one.

I bought one last year before a trip to the keys and it is worth every penny! I generally run it from the time I get up to hitting the sack (you can run it at night if the sound of the ice emptying doesn't bother you). Like Mike says, take the ice out and put in a cooler because it will melt in the maker if left alone. Cold water freezes faster and provides firmer ice, I'll keep a jug of water in the cooler, then when I empty the icemaker, I can refill the reservoir with cold water if needed. If the weather is nice, we keep the icemaker on a table under the awning, at night and in inclement weather it goes on the counter over the fridge.
When we are not camping, the icemaker goes on the workbench in the garage and makes ice over the weekend to keep the garage cooler iced down.
As an added bonus, I have noticed that the ice from the portable machine seems to last longer than the ice from my machine at work (the ice is denser).
Enjoy the ice maker for many years to come, you won't regret it!

Thanks for all the feedback! I figure I'll bring it on our next week long trip in a few days. I may put it under the dinette table to transport and during the day so it will be out of the way.
It makes ice every 7-10 mins. Small cubes are a good size with Med & large options (which will take longer obviously) and tubular, which the kids think is cool. I did 6 qts of water and filled 2 cups & 2 gallon baggies within 8 hours.

I think the portable ice maker is the best mod investment that I made. I put mine on triple slides in storage compartment. This makes it easy to remove also if needed cleaning. I also vented excess heat generated by it with a 12volt fan.
I highly recommend one..

For some reason this just seems wrong ...
Pour a jug of water into the ice maker and it makes a little pan of ice. Scoop out the ice and dump it into your cooler, repeat, over and over and over - all day long. Drain the melted ice from the cooler ...
It just doesn't sound very efficient ... If you could cut a little hole in your cooler so the ice would drop straight in (I realize the cold air would then escape through the hole)
I have heard those 12v electric powered coolers don't work well either. We have the standard 3 way refrigerator in our popup - but it is amall and it gets somewhat warm during the day and freezes at night - so we also bring a large cooler. I just hate paying $2 or $3 for a bag of ice twice a day.
We do about 75 percent of our camping at campgrounds with electricity, so I have also thought about a little dorm fridge.
How much ice can you realistically make in one of these ice makers per day ? Assuming you are at the campsite for a couple hours in the am and a couple hours in the pm ?
