Hello all. Planning a fall(Aug.)trip. I'm looking at a few days at Durango than a couple at MesaVerde and than heading over to the Bluff area for maybe 3 days. Which CG do U recommend in Bluff area? We will have our 34' Class'A' and two 49cc Yamaha Zuma scooters. I'm thinking of Bluff as a 'Basecamp' and ride scooters over to the Goosenecks and Valley of Gods area 1 day and the Hovenweep area another day. Can Hovenweep ruins be reached on the roads from the towns of Montezuma Creek and/or Aneth or do I have to go all the way to the Visitors center near the Colorado border?

When our Church group worked in that area 5(?) years ago, we stayed at the Cadillac Ranch RV Park. Nice little park with a small lake for free fishing, close to the San Juan River, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. We actually worked in Montezuma Creek, and all the highways we used were in good condition then. Have fun, and take a drive through Monument Valley, we like the area, but it was sure good to get home and see green stuff!!!!!!

In a word, Yes. You can also get there by turning off of 191 about half way between Blanding and Bluff.
If you decide to head for Hovenweep via the road to Aneth and Montezuma Creek, be sure to check out the "apartments" across the river (ask and someone will tell you where to look), only north facing Anasasi ruins I've ever seen.
As for the CG to use, I'd agree that Cadillac RV Ranch is a great spot. Not many amenities but the CG is always spotless, and Gaylan and Charlie are wonderful people. In fact talk nnice to Charlie and she'll give you a run down on the "local" ruins.
Might also consider a stop, or even a night at Sand Island. Nice BLM campground whose focal point is the Petroglyph wall.
And I agree with a "scoot" down Combs Wash, as well as Butler Wash. And if you have the time a trip up to Muley Point is well worth your time (the road up the hill from Goose Necks).
Also a Navajo Burger at Twin Rocks is a must, at least for us.

I agree with all of this. WEll, except for one fine point: Get the Navajo Taco at Twin Bluffs. With a cold beer.
We always stay at Cadillac Ranch. Was last there October 2007. Will probably go back Jan. 2009 for the Valley of Gods balloon festival.

Sand Island??? So U say there is a BLM CG there? can I get my 34' Class'A' in there ok? I'm now thinking of a few days at Cadillac for the electric and than some Roughin it...yeah, I know...its kinda hard ta call it 'Rough' in a Class'A'. LOL: At Least I don't wear PLASTIC cowboy hats.

Yep, several sites you can get into and most are fairly level. It's about five miles west of Bluff along 191 just before 191 turns south again and crosses the bridge.
The CG does have a couple water spigots, pit toilets but no dump station.
We usually stop at Sand Island first, spend a few nights then head for Cadillac for a couple of days -- gotta get things cleaned up, you know.
And -- I still prefer the Navajo Burger over the Navajo Taco .
