Cosidering Toyota is warrantying the supercharger and such I would assume it is like the rest of their TRD items and will not void other areas. There has been a warrantied SC package by TRD for the Tacoma for years now. They just did the same for the Tundra. I don't think anyone is buying one to use it as a 1 ton hauler, but to increase performance within its limits it might be nice. As someone said mileage may not be all that bad considering the extra HP would also allow the transmission to stay in the higher gears longer. With a 6 speed already getting around 18mpg highway that would be pretty impressive as it seems that 6th gear is an economy gear.

it won't void the warranty. But the warranty has finite time frame. Assume that anything serious in cost (tranny, heads, etc) will appear 6 days after its expiration.
Its a good idea, looks tight, stealth, but you gotta pay to play. $6 g's does not cover the total cost, you should plan on that.
Having it protected under warranty is a good deal still. Or is it? of that 6 g's, you can bet a major % is warranty work.

BTW - $6K (give or take) is about the going rate for blower kits for domestic trucks. So I don't think this is out of line.
The truck should be a screamer.
But there's more to towing than sheer power alone. Otherwise we'd see Vipers and Vettes with rigs in tow...

Since Toyota has much more cash than the big three put together it should be no big deal for them to come out with 3/4 and 1 ton versions of the Tundra pickups.

That's the ticket, build a beefier truck for the serious haulers and leave the gimmickry for the stop-light bandits.

I saw one of these on a Dynojet on the Power Tour...100% box stock except for the blower, a Dynomax cat-back exhaust, and aftermarket wheels, he put about 425HP to the rollers. Very impressive.
(Though the Chevy stepside that spun the rollers to just over 700HP was more impressive. )

The warranty is only valid if you have a dealer do the installation. If you just purchase the supercharger kit from the parts counter and have a local mechanic install it then it voids your engine warranty. Dealer installation is going to add a lot to the bill and I wouldn't want most of them tearing into my motor. A supercharger isn't going to turn a 1/2 ton into a 3/4 ton, it's just going to give you a faster 1/2 ton. I'd very seriously doubt that you could add a supercharger to the 5.7 and keep the same fuel mileage, I'd expect at least a 1-2 mpg drop in daily driving. All in all I'd say it looks like a fun toy but of no real utility to anyone using their truck as a truck.

How about the weight of the vehicle? We have Utes that have turboed 6 Cylinder engines that run 410hp and 415lbs of torque at 2000rpm. They only weight 4000lb. No way are you going to tow anything more than 5000lb even with all that power and torque. What stress does towing put on the drive train and suspension?

killerbee wrote: a supercharger is a parasitic accessory. How can it possibly increase mileage? Power, yes...mileage? Increasing VE is of no value if the vehicle is lean. At a 20 HP output hiway empty cruise, a supercharger is like an AC compressor you can't shut off. Forced induction such as a SC is a parasitic loss, but it increases mileage potentially by providing more energy with less effort. Chargers take power to drive, but provide excesses of what that deficit is. VE is 100% minimum with forced induction, NA engines may be 85 - 90% at peak health. Also, forced induction does not suffer dramatically as does an NA engine at altitude. The only real drawback I can see with the Eaton charger on the 5.7 is detonation, and even though TMC warranties the engine and blower, they do not consider detonation to be an accepted fault of the package if a failure such as broken rings, ring lands, pistons, etc. were to surface.
