Hi Everyone,

I have another newbie question.

We have a Keystone Sprinter w/a 13,500 btu a/c unit. I need to be able to run it next week and I'm not sure my 15 amp electical supply will allow me to do that.

As a back up, we have the following generator:

4 x 120V 20A
1 x 120/240V 30A Twistlock

Rated Watts 5000
Surge Watts 6250
Voltage (Vac) 120/240
Output (A) 41.6/20.8

The question is, can I use the generator to power the a/c? The 30A twistlock receptacle looks slightly different than I remember the plug on the tt.

On another note, if I put the refrig on gas and do not run anything else, will it be ok to run the a/c on the 15 A circuit and not damage the a/c?

We haven't been able to upgrade to the 30 amp service as yet and if it's really humid, I need to run the a/c without damaging it.

Thanks for your help. Sorry to ask so many questions.

Your generator will definitely run the AC. I have a pair of Honda eu2000i's, combined rated load 26.6A, which run a 15k AC fine.

Any 20AMP 110V circuit will run the AC. Can't run too many more things on that circuit but the AC deaws substantially less than 20A. Just don't have the numbers off the top of my head. There is an adapter for your generator. Any RV store is most likely going to have it.

OOPs you said 15 amp. Yes the 15 amp should do it if you have a healthy breaker and a solid 120V line, but you probably won't be able to run anything else on that circuit.

20 amps should run it just take a volt meter and try a plug on the trailer with it running and see what the voltage is.The 15 amp would be close and give you low voltage I would think.I don`t run any thing with less than 110 volts. Also check your plug and drop cord if you are using one to see if they get warm or hot..

The 15 amp should be OK. Bring a Voltage Meter. As long as the voltage stays above 110 with the air running you are fine. It may dip at start up and that is fine. Fridge and water on propane for sure.

When you first plug in the converter may draw a lot of power if your battery is not fully charged. You can flip the breaker off or let it charge a couple hours before you start the air. Flip it back on after the air is running and see if the voltage and breaker will hold. Otherwise leave the converter off until the morning when the air can be off a few hours.

Anyway you get the idea. I would try my best not to start that generator if I had 15 amps of power.

I would be very sure that the twist-lock plug on that genny is NOT wired for 220 volts. On many contractor-type generators, that connection is 220 volts!

That's what I was afraid of. I know that if we do something wrong, we could totally burn out the wiring on the tt. How would I check to see if the twist loc plug is wired for 220v or not? Any ideas?

I will try to use just the 15 A shore power that I have but I wanted to know if the generator would be a back up. BTW, I want to get 2 of the Honda 2000 but dh doesn't think we need it, nor do we really want to spend the $2k at this point.

Thanks to everyone for all your answers.

The specs you listed say 120/240 twistlock, so that would be a strong indication it is. Just get a VOM and check the voltages.

Your generator is plenty big enough to start and run the air, but, and here's the dreaded comment, it's probably pretty darn loud.
