We just traded in our fifth wheel and TV for a new Gulfstream Bounty Hunter toyhauler. I am looking at the Chevrolet Colorado 2WD Crew Cab as a TOAD. If anyone has any comments about this vehicle I would like to hear it. Can you tow the two wheel version 4 down, and what modifications must you have done to the transmittion if any.

It can be towed 4 down with a drive shaft disconnect, which is costly and a PITA, as far as I'm concerned, plus REMCO has gone from a consumer friendly company to a consumer unfriendly oriented company. With the price of trucks in the tank right now, why not just get a Colorado 4X4, which does not need any modifications to tow and give you off road ability.

Unless you can find a 2 wheel drive in a manual transmission, that would be able to be towed.

I'd definitely recommend the Colorado in 4WD. Ours has been all over the US and to Alaska twice. The only problem we had was the cab was not as air tight as it should have been, and after 100 miles or more on dirt, it was very dusty inside. Chevy dealer fixed it when I got home without charge.
If you can, get the wheel flares unpainted, as the wide track kicks stones and road debris up and chips the painted ones. When we go North, we have a cap on it and carry a freezer, 14' inflatable boat, boat trailer, outboard and lots of fishing gear. Although we were well within tire, axle, and GVW limits, the truck had a decided squat to it. A set of helper springs from JC Whitney fixed that, and I intend to keep the truck for a good long time.
Needless to say the pushing two buttons to set it to tow is the best idea I've seen in a long time. DW does that, and I hook the hitch, plug and brake and we're on the road in 5 minutes.

The Colorado/Canyon is listed as towable with the automatic in the 2008 Motorhome Magazine Dinghy Roundup. It lists no restrictions. A search of the owners manual will give the manufacturers opinion on the subject.

Another point about the 4X4 Colorado or it's GMC twin. My brother has an off road version of the vehicle with the larger tires ect. In my opinion it is one rough riding truck. A friend has and tows the "regular" 4X4 (not the off road version) and it rides much smoother. The two tow the same, after that it just depends on what you want.
