Today I plugged in my '93 Roadtrek to shore power at home in preparation for a trip, as I have done many times in the past. After about an hour, the converter became "loud" - I guess there is a fan in there that seems to be running. I don't recall hearing this before, and we have had this van for several years. Is this a sign of a converter problem?
The fan bearings could be wearing out. My suggestion is to upgrade any old single stage converter/charger with a new 3 stage smart charger/converter, such as the Progressive Dynamic's. The new converter wont boil the batteries, and they will require far less maintenance.
I recently installed a converter conversion kit from Randy (at Best Converter). Except for having to drill a couple of holes to re-fasten the original cover plate, everything about the conversion was straight forward (and it really needed to be, with my level of expertise). Don't have a long experience with it, since I just put it in, but it seems to do what it's supposed to do. And Randy is helpful.
Got my WFCO 3 stage converter from him. It installed easily, done exactly like the instructions.
It's been over 6 months and it's still doing what it's supposed to do. I left the van plugged in for 3 straight months and had no problem with the battery being boiled.
I like the kit form of the WFCO converter. It fits exactly where the junk Parallex was located. The old AC breakers fm the old Parallex and the exterior cover over the converter are reused.
A new converter is slipped in were the old converter used to be. A new DC circuit board is supplied and with the new DC board, all the DC lines are filtered.

Thanks for the info. We are leaving tomorrow for a tandem rally in Oregon, and of course the RT is our 'hotel' room. So I will check with Randy at BestConverter when we return. I'm glad to hear that the conversion is straight forward; I'll need that
