Our favorite place on the GA Coast is Jekyll Island.....our next favorite would be Crooked River State Park in St. Mary's....also enjoy very much Fort McAllister State Park in Richmond Hill, GA and Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah...but again, Jekyll is the favorite.

We stay at Skidaway several times a year. 10-15 minutes from downtown Savannah and nice and quiet. The campground at Crooked river is fine but not much to do around the area except for Cumberland Island. Lots of ticks at Crooked River. There is a boat ramp at Crooked river.

We like Skidaway for Savannah, Crooked River for Cumberland Island (with a canoe this might be a great area - lots of marshes to explore). Not sure if you can canoe to Cumberland Island or not. We have stayed at Jekyll Island and love the island but don't care for the park. Staff were not very friendly and could be downright rude at times. Fort McAllister was OK. Be aware that Crooked River and Fort McAllister have lots and lots of mosquitoes. If it gets a lot of rain, Crooked River's dump stations gets flooded and you can't use it. They were nice enough to make arrangement for their campers at two gas stations on I95 (both directions) though. If you are eligible, Kings Bay NAS has a great CG in St. Marys.
