PamfromVA wrote: I've had the kindle for a couple of months and love it. It was great on our last trip where we were gone for a week and I didn't need to carry a bunch of books with me. I'm a fast reader and can go through a book a day if left alone. If you check on the amazon website, there is a forum that will help answer your questions but you can download and use other electronic books on the kindle, they just have to be in a specific type file format. The kindle uses their "Whispernet" connection which is actually through Sprint - not Verizon.

Pam, that's great! What type of format are the other books in?

Now I wonder. If every one here has a computer, maybe a laptop; why buy another device when the laptop will do the same thing? You can download e-zines and e-books from a number of different sites that work on the laptops.

Well, for one thing, the Kindle does not use power to maintain a page. It only uses power when a page is "turned." I forget how many pages it will flip on a charge but it is in the 5 figure range. I don't know about your laptop, but mine is a whole lot bigger and heavier than a Kindle and has to be charged every few hours. A laptop has an awkward form factor for lying in bed and reading or in a hammock on a lazy afternoon....
As for checking out the books... you can go to Amazon and look for just books available on Kindle. It has multiple categories and you can surf as much as you want.

We can afford it, so why not?
Well, sure, if you can afford it and you want it...why not?
I feel the same way about a lot of things. It's all about choices.
The Kindle will come down in price quickly, and more and more books, magazines and newspapers will be available soon.
I've looked at the Kindle and you've hit on my two primary issues with it. It's pricey and I can't buy just any book. It has to be one that's available through Amazon in the Kindle format. While the number of books they have available sounds impressive, I read a lot of theology, philosophy and professionsl clergy stuff. There's not a whole lot of that available for the Kindle yet. I'm willing to wait for the price to come down and the book availability to go up.

If you can supplement his poor hearing with hearing aids (like you are trying to do with his eyesight by using Kindle), I understand that Cracker Barrel offers tapes or CD's of various books or stories.
I never used them but a friend uses them all the time, especially when making long trips. Granted, playing CD's have requirements all their own but Cracker Barrel's services may be an reasonable alternative if he can remedy his hearing problem.

Since I take my laptop with me on every trip, I wonder if I could download the same e-books onto my laptop?

I bought the Kindle for my wife a couple of weeks ago and she just loves it. Yes it is expensive, but well worth the cost if you consider the weight savings of all the books she is carrying around, (100+).
