I use Mobil 1 15W50 in my 2007. Manual recommends 15W40 in hot weather That little air cooled engine needs all the help it can get when it gets above 100 degrees in my opinion.

I called Onan tech support a couple of years ago. The Tech support guy said 15-40 is recommended and synthetic is OK. He then went on to suggest using whatever I used in my engine.

I put Castrol Syntec 20W-50 in mine cause we run at 115F ambient.
The manual says that a higher "W" viscocity reduces oil consumption.

My last 2 gas Onan's called for straight 30 weight, unless in very cold temps which isn't your case. That said many of us running 15W-40 in the engine also use it in the Onan to simplify carrying just one oil. I haven't talked to a Onan tech but there have been many post on this site relaying that Onan tech's at RV rallies say 15W-40 is great.
The older I get, the better I used to be.

I have a 6.5 Onan with almost 1100 hours on it. I was using 10-40 and thought I would try straight 30 weight. Smoked and used oil. I went to 10-30 Penzoil extra life and it quit smoking and does not use oil. 200 hours on it and no problems since I switched over. I use a Fram 3600 filter for the last 500 hours. Good luck.

BUT....let us not forget that the exact same engines that Cummins will use 15W-40 Valvolene Premium Blue in...they will ALSO use 5W-40 Valvolene EXTREME BLUE in...which is a synthetic!!!

Pusher, are you saying it smoked after you put in the 30 weight and that's why you tried it; or it smoked after putting in the 30 weight and the 10W30 Penzoil fixed it?

Why would you go from a 10w-40 to a 10w-30???
