I guess its all in the definition of Quiet.
Most people know that it is not the exhaust that make a B&S untolerably noisy.

Could you imagine if some little kid walked up and grabbed that muffler after it had been running a while

Everyones idea of what quiet is is different. Any open frame generator will be noisy even if you take ALL the exhaust noise out of the equation.
I bought a Honda EU1000i because the 6500 Onan in my coach was too noisy for me and it would have been nearly impossible to do much about it.
The EU1000i is NOT quiet-it is just quieter than a lot of other generators but by my definition not quiet. I have built a sound deadening box it sets in that makes it quiet. I used some hi-tech sound deadening material used to quiet luxury yacht engine rooms to absorb the noise. Cooling issues were considered when I designed it and and are not a problem in 400+ hours. Its fun to have folks walk by and ask what that box is and I tell them it is my generator. They will them usually ask what does it sound like when the generator is running. With a big smile I say "It's running now".

This can be demonstrated by holding a ball of rags over the exhaust for a few seconds.

Ain't no learning like through experience!!! I have some learning through experience, ..: 1: don't stick tongue on a metal Ice tray. 2. don't walk with a glass in your hand, I fell on the glass and about 20 stitches in my forhead. 3. Don't climb into an ice box, (good thing my cheek got caught on the latch. Test your ski bindings before hitting the slopes( compound fracture of left ankle...4 Don't play baseball in the dark, broken nose...5.Don't stick a fork into a 120 power outlet....(fire ain't cool)...6. Don't ride a bike Barefoot, more stitches..... Ain't no learning like experience.....You can tell someone, "Hey, see that stove over there, it's hot!"... Some folks need to smell burning flesh!

Now that's a neat idea. Since Isabelle and all the nonHonda generators yelling around the neighborhood, I have wondered if something like that could be built. Can you give any details on how you did it like size, shape, how did you manage to keep the cooling under control, how do you break it down for travel, where did your source the material, what do you use for support/backing? Just a few questions.

Or the smell of a bunch of little boys standing around and daring one to well... be a little boy... on to the muffler.
