We know they offer 5.4L in F250 with higher GCWR, but that doesn't mean it will be any fun towing that much weight with it. In fact, I think it would be down right frustrating. I tow 6k with my SCrew and that's all I'd want behind it unless it's flat as heck.

The tranny upgrade the SD offers would make a difference though.

Hmm... good replies.

I want a 250+ size truck, because I also use it for towing landscaping trailers (local towing, almost no highway)... it will basically always be towing something. The F150 is good, but I don't know if it would like to tow that much. I am also thinking of brake size, frame, suspension, etc. I don't see us upgrading to a larger camper in the near future. We are on our 5th season with our 21', and still going strong.

There seem to be a lot of trucks with the 5.4 engine in them around me.

The Dodge Megacab is actually smaller in overall length than a 250 crewcab? I have to look that up... because the Megacabs look huge, at least.

Lots to think about.

Anyone have problems contacting dealerships by email? Out of three dealerships I emailed, only 1 (one!) replied. And the saleslady emailed back and forth with info, before I actually met her in person... and that is the one I am talking to now. I am confused by my local dealership which I have bought almost all of my vehicles from over the years. They have me (and the wife) in their files, yet they didn't respond to my 2 email requests.

Also, there really aren't all that many used 4 door pickups in my area! People seem to be keeping them longer than regular cab pickups.

One nice looking used (2004) F250 (with a 5.4) I looked at is newer than my truck, but has 10,000 more miles on it. My 2000 F250 7.3 has only 45,000 miles on it, and is in excellent condition (excellent may be an understatement!).

I really don't want to get rid of my existing truck, but the family has outgrown it.

You will never be happy with a 5.4 after towing with the awesome 7.3. If I were you I would be looking for four door 7.3. Look at my truck, I can tell you it is huge inside, plus I get the benefit of the 7.3. Right now people are selling them like crazy. It is a buyers market!!

Find yourself a V10 gasser, you will get as much pulling power, plus the lower cost of gas vs diesel. That's what I did.

And since the F250/350 weighs 1000/1500 pounds more than the F150 there is little benefit.

4.10 even 4.56 is available on F150 Supercrew for about $800 per axle from a 4x4 shop.

Stay away from the gassers of your going to tow (been there, done that). I was a Ford man for years and like you,did not want to give up my 7.3 Power Stroke. Still love the look of the Ford HD's, but the reported performance of the newer Power Strokes (6.0 & 6.4)did was unimpressive (pass anything on the road but a fuel stop). There came a time when we moved from the city to the country and decided to upgrade from our extended cab, short bed 2X4 to a full back seat, long bed, 4X4. We shopped around and decided that Chevy/GMC was the way to go. More power and less noise than the Fords & Dodges. Didn't care for the interior of the Dodge and the mega cab shortened the box, which was something we were trying to get away from. Still love the looks of the Fords, but the Duramax and Allison transmission are the cats meow. Test drive 'em all and decide for yourself. Good luck & enjoy!

What kind of fuel economy, loaded and empty, are you getting with that V10?

It makes me sick to see the ads in the newspaper for used trucks. Just today, there's an ad for a 2005 F350 4x4 dually diesel Lariat for $18,900.
