From the longitude and latitude positions given below, how would I determine the compass heading from home to cellular tower?

Home Lat: 39deg, 36', 28.13" Lon: 87deg, 17', 33.83"

Tower Lat: 39deg, 33', 54.72" Lon: 87deg, 19', 23.52"

Use this calculator. Or write them down on a piece of graph paper with number getting bigger left-to-right (west to east) and top-to-bottom (n-2-s).

You are going to point SW according to my mapping.
That is assuming a directional antenna is in use?
I use Delorme and I just put the mouse at your coordinates marked it.
The new position you gave is SW of there.
If you have a mapper on your computer try moving the mouse around and see if it reads out your position. Many do.

Easiest way... Using a GPS receiver at you home program those in as a way point and see what way the arrow points

Harder way, Locate your house on a map, Locate the tower on the map (Microsoft S&T will do this, so will Rand-Mcnally's products.. I've not used other products but I'm 100% sure most of the products will work just fine)

Use a compass

I worked in the cellular industry for many years. So determining which tower you are using isn't always as straight forward as it might seem. The way cellular technology works means you may or may not get the closest tower to you.

Each tower site has a certain number of transmitter/receivers (channels) assigned to them based on certain criteria. This depends on the loading of a given site as well as other sites in the area that overlap. The cell providers can only have so many transmitters licensed by the FCC at a given site. When you make a phone call, you might get the site nearest you provided there are unused channels available at that site the instant you make your call. If the channels are all in use at that site your phone may contact another tower further away and at a different location. Sometimes you might be on a call while on one site and could get bumped to another site. This is why from time to time you might notice a change or even lose your connection.
