Hello,

I recently bought a new 5th wheel from out of state. I went to register it today with DMV as I now have the MSO. I was told by the DMV clerk that CA does not look at the MSO, but needs to inspect the VIN number on the trailer, which means I need to haul it down there. I can understand this for used cars and trailers, but a new one? I was not aware of this. I thought the MSO would be enough.

Was the clerk typically misinformed, or is this what other CA residents had to do?

Just curious...

Yes, It is what I had to do when I brought my brand new trailer in to Calif. from Montana a few years ago. It a P.I.T.A. but it must be done to get registered.

I want to leave this earth quietly in my sleep like my grandfather and not like the hysterical, screaming passengers riding in granddad's RV just before the big crash.

Here in Montana we can call for a Law Enforcement Officer to come and inspect the vehicle. I have done it many times. I suppose in CA they would say "we don't have time for that, you have to bring it in!"
It would be interesting taking a 32 foot fifth wheel into down-town Billings, and finding a place to park it near the courthouse!

Call your local CHP office. They'll have a beat guy/gal drop by while on patrol and do the VIN verification. I did them all the time.

You should dbe able to get local LE to verify the VIN for you. You will need the form from DMV for them, however. Make sure you get the form first, have local LE verify the VIN (Unless you live in a large city, like over 50,000) and take the form back to DMV. If you can't get local LE, go to the local CHP hangout, with the trailer and ask them to verify for you.

I tried AAA/CSAA and they claim that only DMV can do this - they only take care of the easy stuff. It was the same way for the various cars I bought from out of state.

Thanks everyone for the replies! It sounds like I'll have to drag my trailer to DMV then. They did say a police officer could come to my house and do this, but I don't see that happening!
