My kids will only be with me for so long and the memories we are making are worth more to me than the DIFFERENCE in fuel this year at $4 for 87 octane versus $3 last year...
Diesel has seen a much larger jump from last year but in the overall scheme of things look at the DIFFERENCE from last year and it isn't as large as you would think...In the scheme of life I mean...
Most folks over the span of a year can figure out how to shave $300-$500 by not eating out as much, going to starbucks as much, taking fewer trips to local stores, opening the windows at home instead of using the A/C, etc...
The DIFFERENCE this year for my trip in fuel was not going to stop my memories with my girls and wife...the oil execs can stunt my local travels to the walmart but not memories for my girls...sorry.
I agree with you crapie_fisherman. I have had it with worrying about the price of fuel. Most of the people who own RV's work too hard all year to spend their vacation sitting home. I went in today and told them at work I am taking a week off to camp this fall. I'll cut out a trip or two to WalMart, brew my own coffee instead of getting it at McDonalds, pack my lunch each day, drink tap water instead of bottled, whatever it takes to get out and have some fun before I am too old to go.

joe.
I'm in the same position and agree completely. We're leaving as scheduled in one week for 17 days to Yellowstone, Tetons, Black Hills. We'll keep going until we run out of things we can do without...

We planned a trip around Lake Superior for this August and with the cost of fuel going up $1.25 from when we planned it originally we know it will be more costly.
But with 2,000 miles, 10MPG, it will be $250 more for the fuel. I can't see canceling for that incremental cost increase. I'm not getting younger and it may even be more enjoyable since the parks might be less crowded than any other year.
We're not going to be foolish with fuel use but won't stop traveling due to the cost. Just more careful with where we go.
I'm not cutting my trip short but I am taking my very small camping trailer rather than the bigger one (500 lbs vs 2200). Not that I can't afford the higher fuel price but rather if we don't dramatically reduce demand, the "Wall Street speculators" will continue to bid up the price of oil. Conservation is the only short term solution to fuel cost the consumer has - Increased oil supply and alternative fuel are longer term solutions. When I was a kid we had to buy gasoline with ration stamps. No one really liked it too much but we survived, took camping trips to the local state parks, and all my memories of my childhood are happy ones. Are we "spoiled"???
we did our big trip and are doing several extended weekend trips just as always. Have cut LOTS of other stuff(also emptied out all HTT cabinets and lighten our load a bit) and are starting to explore all local campgrounds for future years.
It is more costly, but when gas is 6-7-8$ per gallon, that's when we will cancel our trips.
Making memories is priceless

^^^^ That the problem right there, speculators bidding up oil, Supplies are up, no shortage at all. The US oil usage is down for the first time in a very long time. Countries should pay for oil by there countries usage. China then would pay the most by far.

^^^^ I don't think we are spoiled, The country made a real dumb vote when we let Bush in for a second term. Another big factor on oil and the economy is the fact that the US dollar isn't worth******right now so EVERYTHING cost all of us more
OK enough of talking about stuff I cant change
We wanted to take a trip out west this year but decided to get more bang for our buck and take lots of trips within 2-3 hours from home. We live in PA. so we are lucky as far as nice places to go within that range like Finger lakes, NY, Hershey/Lancaster, Pa, Virgina beach, Williamsburg Va, Ocean City Md, ETC.
We are hoping to make it to ALL the above this year and like others have said make memory's with the kids/grand kids
We are paying $1.35/L up here....which translate to more than US prices.
I'm also about giving my kids great memories as they are already talking about past trips to Florida, Keywest.....seeing the dolphins, counting 12 shooting stars in one night!...canoeing...all that great stuff( ther only 6 & 3 ).
Gas will be over $2.00/L in the next 2 - 5 yrs...which will probably be $5 - 7 in the US....enjoy yourselfs now!.....camping will be if not already a luxury to most.
Any camping is good camping!
