The daughter rushed in last night and asked if I plan to do any mowing soon. I asked why and she said because I could not move the mower because the cat has three new kittens under the mower deck.

If we do not get some rain soon there will be not need to mow and way. Well needless to say she as a cat lover is very happy. This is the second time for this cat and last time they were still born which makes this event even more special for her.

Next time yer "Miss Kitty" needs someplace to give birth, she can come use my mower deck. Darn the bad luck; guess I'd have to skip mowing till the little ones are weened and out the door, ah, er, deck eh!

Happy camping!!! See ya'll down the road!!!

why not just put the cat and kittens in a box on a old blanket or something and go do your lawn mowing it would be more comfortable and safer for all of them.

Good idea and make sure it's in a safe place... after all it's our duty to protect them. Of course after the kittens are weaned the momma cat should be spayed.

Well it's nice to know she and her kits will be safe. But please after she is done. Have her spayed. There are far too many unwanted cats around now. Your local animal shelter will most likely do it for around $35. Especially if it's a stray that you are doing for a Spay/Neuter release. And you can also chip in for shots for her if you feel generous. Sorry for the PSA but we have adopted 4 rescues that travel with us.

The cat is a free range cat and she figured out the safety thing all by herself. Under the mower deck is the one place the stray dog can not reach.

My neighbor keeps the yard around the house so I just mow the fields with old Snapper so they are better for the kids, cats and dog to play in and go for walks. I like to start each day with a walk so the dog can do her thing in the woods.

The daughter was OK with spaying until she learned it meant no more kittens. Kids learn a lot about life from animals. Some of the lessons are painful but some of those can be best remembered.

I realize you choose to post sometimes awaiting the responses from people who will advise you to spay/neuter your pets so you can defend all the various "reasons" why you don't..... Many people have given you great suggestions about your dog and now your cat but alas they fall on deaf ears/eyes.

Certainly you know that your daughter would learn a lot about life as a responsible pet owner if she had some good examples. As parents, it's up to us to be that example.

Cat you make a good point. I can see we are passing on what we were taught growing up and want the kids to have the same experiences with animals around the place as we did. So far the kids do a good job of placing any kittens. Free range cats do not seem to have as many per liter.

Agrnbrt think of free range cats more like the free range chicken eggs you may prefer. Those hens have full access to food but they are just not caged all day.

Cat mentioned several have offered good suggestions and but they fell on deaf ears. They did not fall on deaf ears because no suggestions have been requested.

It is no accident that we do not live within sight of any other humans yet we do live closer to the road than I prefer. We live in an area where dogs, cats, chickens, peacocks, cows and a mule from time to time can be seen in or crossing the road way.

The only cat we have had get run over in a long time is the one we ran over in the MH when she jumped from the perch behind the headlights after we got down to the big road and I went to WOT because we had just changed the fuel filter which had fixed a major engine performance issue. The wonder sound of the engine was off set by a double bumping sound but saw nothing in the road until we returned home from the funeral home. We now try to check the nose before we take off.

The last dog did get run over by a dually. The kids had been on a walk in the fields and woods and for some reason came back up into the front yard by the road. The herding tendency of the young dog took over and he tried to stop the truck but the driver made the common mistake of putting on the brakes and faking out the dog. The kids saw the dog go under the front and come out the rear and live for 5 minutes. It was fatal for the dog and very upsetting for all of the rest of us.

I was attached to the dog as well and had just again said we were going to get a shock collar but the son said he did not want one because it would hurt the dog. We now have a collar and both of the kids have watched the wonderful training DVD that came with the collar and they are working with the pre collar training steps now. She is doing well at learning the lessons.

The son asked for the collar for the stray that seems to plan on staying around. He is learning how to act in the best interest of animals even if it does seem hard at the time for the animal.

I know some may not understand or agree but helping kids learn about life is important to us. In a different location or culture we would have to take a different approach but we selected the location and culture.

While I do understand some of you have seen bad things happen to animals and think you have to protect all animal but the fact remains unless prevented by humans most animals can learn to do a good job in caring for their young and themselves. Keep in mind strays figure out how to make it without a master.

I understand the nature of this and most forums is a place were personal agendas are advanced. Just keep in mind unsolicited suggestions never carry much weight but that is something we started to practice as young kids.
