1. I see that some of you are on line. I called Verizon to see what it would cost to get on line with my air card and it's very expensive. Any idea's on what might be cheaper would be appreciated.
2. After leaving Victoria we are going to travel to Port Hardy. Are there many campgrounds and if so any that you recommend? We are 40' with a toad.
Thanks in advance.

There used to be a great little RV Park right on the water at Miracle Beach between Comox and Campbell River, just down the road a bit from the entrance to the Provincial park. Some sites back right on to the beach. Haven't been there for about 5 years but really enjoyed it. Provincial park is pretty nice as well and quite large but no hookups or sites right on the water.

1 - do a search here, this was covered fairly recently in good detail. effectively 2 choices - get a Pay as you type phone from Telus (Best coverage where you are going) or Verizon can change your plan to accomodate.
2. You can't swing a dead cat on the east side of Vancouver Island without hitting an RV park, Provincial Park or RV Dealer , oh wait there is the occasional golf course too
Most PP will be super tight for your coach but if you're brave and comfortable with your edges you should be able to squeeze into most places. Roads in and out will be the biggest challenge. No services but usually lots of space and privacy.
Rathtrevor, Miracle Beach are two choices in Parksville and Courtenay areas (mid ways up the island)

Keep in mind unless you're coming up after Sept 15 I'd reserve each place. Popular area and with your size you'll be limited to fewer sites than the guy with the tent.

As far as cels? Stop at any shopping centre, gas station, drug outlet and buy an International calling card. You use a pay phone for your calls, but it's cheap like borsht.

Our experience has been that it is getting harder and harder to find pay phones. Also in a lot of parks, the phones aren't always convenient to c.g. and may be located at an office on the way into the camping area. Many times it was necessary to drive or bike to where the phone was located - somewhat of a nuisance and now adds to gas costs. When we travel, I often use PocketMail, but I am not renewing it this year for the reasons mentioned.

We always stay at Salmon Point RV Resort and Marina near Campbell River. Outstanding site!
North of Campbell River, your choices are more limited - not a lot of parks. We traveled to Port Hardy last year - spent the first night on the Island in Parksville, then drove straight to Port Hardy. On the return trip, we drove straight from Port Hardy to Salmon Point. Also, there aren't many gas stations north of Campbell River, so plan accordingly. I'm sure locals can provide better information.
If you have WiFi or highspeed internet connections, you can use Skype. A Canadian friend put us on to that last year. Cost is either free or a very small annual fee.

There are lots of open WI-FI connections (free) theese days, I was suprised by how many as I was driving around with my laptop one day...shouldn't be hard to find a connection in any major center.

We are making our way to Alaska, every park we have been in has WIFI except one. Our Verizon cell phone signal has been good until this week, beginning in Ft. Nelson.
