My 2001 E450 has a "second" cigarette lighter socket in the dashboard - - just above the regular lighter socket. Does anyone know exactly how this can be removed? What holds it in?
I would like to remove it and mount my ScanGauge there, and use the hole to route the wire through to the data port. Hopefully not butchering anything in the process.
The reason for spelling is so that all of the words don't look the same.
I think you unscrew it from the back, its called a power point, so just pull the one wire off, and unscrew it, and a small ring will come off the front, and most out the back.
Don't ask how you reach behind it through. lol.

You could just remove the rubber door and mount the Scangauge over the opening. Using velcro. You might need that lighter conn in the future. Also looks like a lot of work to remove dash to get at.
I mounted mine on the steering column with velcro.

First, I removed the panel below the dash on the left side of the steering wheel. This gets you quite a bit closer, but no cookie. Then I pulled the doghouse - - and while there is a pretty good sized opening all the way across the top of it, there is LOTS of stuff in the way as was the case with the panel. By squeezing and pushing, I could just barely touch the cigarette lighter, but had no hope at all of reaching that accessory outlet. I DID get a pretty good look at how they are mounted however, and decided there was no simple way of just unhooking the wire and popping the unit out.
So figuring that "faint heart rarely wins anything," I decided to sacrifice the socket. I attacked from the front side with a small pair if channel-lok type pliers, and a sidecutter. Got it out after considerable mangling of the socket.
Upon inspection, I'm quite convinced there is no other way I could have removed it. In fact, at this point I'm still not even sure how they got it in there! Nonetheless, I think this is going to make a pretty tidy installation for the ScanGauge. It will be high enough on the dash that you can see it well without totally losing eye contact with the road.
Now - - If I can just make sense out of the secret code they used for writing the manual.
