I have my 1997 GMC c6500 registered in California and it came back with 789 for the annual registration (again). I was forced to get a 26k sticker because of the weight. Is there a way to lower the registration fee by registering it as an RV or something. Hell, the thing is only used on average of once a month just to tow my 5th wheel and sits in my driveway most of the time. Thanks, Brendan
You can register it as an RV if it has RV self contained facilities permanently installed in it. Meaning, you need to build a sleeper cab for it with bathroom and cooking facilites. Otherwise, it's a commercial vehicle and registration is based on the weight, just as my F350 and Ram50 pickups and our E350 and E150 cargo vans are.

IF you reg. in another state, and drive it for more than 20 days in CA, you have to reg. it in CA. Thus you would pay two states. If you get caught registering a vehicle in another state, when a CA resident, in addition to paying all taxes, etc, you pay a BIG penalty...
The CHP even has a website, where they encourage people to fill in a form giving all info about where they saw the RV, where it is parked, license, etc... They just began it last year, and within a month were getting reports. The money they collected probably paid quite a few CHP salaries. The only safe way to reg it elsewhere, is to live outside the state.

My last dually truck I had to sell. It was registered in AZ and didnt need to pass emissions there cause I had registered it outside Marcopa County (Phoenix area) in a rural area that didn't requre emissions testing. I did this cause the truck had all the emissions equipment removed.
When I brought it here to California, I drove it daily for 5 years and never got stopped, so all was fine. But when I got a small truck to save on gas and kept the dually parked on the street during the day, it got the attention of the city police. Soon I got a letter from the DMV saying I had to either register it in CA, or take it out of the state, or remove the plates and keep it on private property and never drive it on the roads in CA, cause it had been here longer than whatever amount of time they said (I forget the time frame they said). I was given X number of days to comply and if the truck was found parked on the street or being driven on the road after that time with out of state plate, it would be towed to impound, at my expense and there would be other fines as well.
I ended up selling it to a junk yard for peanuts cause I could not register it here cause the emissions equipment, inspection and registration would have cost more than the truck was worth. I could have taken it back to AZ to sell it for more, but I didn't have time to do that. I ended up buying the F350 I have now and registering it in CA and getting a CA driver license and paying all the inflated insurance and registration costs associated with living in this state. At least I saved a few bucks for a few years for as long as I could get away with it.
A GMC C6500 is quite obviously a commercial truck and if you live in the city, parking that truck in a residential neighborhood with an out of state plate on it will get the attention of the city police very quickly. Some neighborhood associations don't even allow a commercial truck to park on the street or in the driveway, regardless of what state the plate is from. This Kalifornia is all about Kommunism.

In MT, we pay about half as much for plates as does our tax-free neighbor to the south - WY. Either register or move - that's your two options.

That's what I do with my MH here in Michigan. I end up paying way less than buying the yearly plate. Yes I have to go to the DMV (SOS in Michigan) and wait each time but if you know when to go it's no problem....

Hmmm...
When I moved to Wyoming about 20 years ago (from Montana), seems to me the registration fees were about the same as Montana. At least I don't remember being very shocked at what it cost to register the van and the truck.
"Tax free"? Having a sales tax is not "tax free". However, NOT having the paperwork of an income tax is a wonderful thing! Coming to Billings to buy "stuff" tax free was great, too!
Yep, register it and pay the bill, or move to another state. that's all you can do, I think.
