I think about 75% of the search process is to evaluate how you react to it.
I offer to run the slides out and such. And act like they have every right to be there and it doesn't bother me one bit.
The last time was where they have a indoor garage area to search. I offered to run the slides out--they said yes, please. I did, then headed off to the waiting area. One guy said hold on a minute--if you have anything that----
I laughed and said I had nothing---to help themselves and check whatever.
I really didn't pay much attention to them. Probably took 20 minutes. Don't know if they were busy in my rig the whole time.
When they were done, not one thing was out of place. Well, the unmarked box of dog cremains might have appeared suspect.
The guy that had the pickup with box topper that was completely jammed full of stuff did have just about every item removed and placed on the floor.
States I have spent the night in my current rig, bought three years ago.
Have RV'ed through 49 states and been in all 50, just short of my half-century.
The last 9 times i've crossed the border into America ita a major shakedown for me and kinda goes like this=
Where you from?
Montreal.
How long you staying?
Two weeks.
Have you ever been arrested?
No.
How much money are you bringing with you?
$1000.
Pull over in gate 4
At this point 2 or three officers will approach me to escort me inside!
Get out of the car!
Ok
Keep your hands where we can see them.
Ok
At the counter another officer takes over.
Have you ever been arrested?
No.
Have you ever lived in the United States?
Yes.
Why?
I immigrated there in 1980
Why?
I was supposed to take over my Dads company.
What happened?
Dad gave the company to my brother so i returned to Canada.
Have you ever been arrested?
No
Wheres your green card?
I surrendered it to customs at the Trout River Border in 1988.
At this point three agents mull over a computer for about 15 minutes.
then one of them comes over and gives me my documents back and wishes me a safe trip.
Dont know why they always have there knickers in a twist about me but i dont really mind because i've got nothing to hide and i know these guys are just doing their job.

In the last two weeks, several acquaintances with Texas plates have been all but strip searched and, when nothing was found, the RCMP demanded, "Where's the guns?" A protest brought words to the effect of, "Well, *ALL* Texans carry guns!" I'd "LOL", but they were serious!
Well....seeings as the RCMP don't do the border searchs, I am going to have trouble believing this story. If ya'll git mah drift?

Well RCMP aside, if you've ever spent any time in Texas you certainly could come to that conclusion. Us Canadians won't really believe it but the first time you enter a business and there is a 36" x 36" sign stating that firearms aren't allowed inside you'll come to believe that just maybe a few Texans carry and this was a corporate type business - and OFFICE for goodness sakes, not some BBQ joint or Bar.
And if you think that border guards on either side of the border don't use profiling to do random searches you really must be naive Sometimes it is good to be a polite middle age white guy!

We recently crossed the border from Anacortes, Wa to Sidney, BC. No search at all. Coming back into the US, it was training day for the border guards and our pop up truck camper had to be popped up and emptied.

We had a pop-up truck camper for several years, crossed the US/Canada border with it many times with no problems. Last July US Customs confiscated the lettuce from our fridge when we returned from BC, but the inspector just crawled in, did not require us to pop the top (although we offered to do so). We crossed at Calais, ME last Monday,(we have a Class B now),kept our lettuce.

I wasn't there myself, so I have no idea who the original tourist was talking to. Had I not had reasonable faith in the bona fides of said tourist, I wouldn't have posted his story.
