Ready to full time in next 30-60 days, and am in the process of following through with all the great advice I have received here. Now believe I want to invest in the best surge protector for my coach.
Coach is a 2004 Dutch Star 41' . It has the auto reel for reeling out /in the 50 amp cord. Doubt that matters, but just in case.
I would sincerely appreciate any and all advice on which surge protector to invest in and best place to buy. If we have any full timers selling them, I'll buy from them. I'd prefer to pay a little more and get the best protection if that is a factor in your advice.
If it's external, would also appreciate advice on how to secure it against theft.
As always, thank you all very much for your patience and valuable, money saving advice.

I assume that you can get at the coach end of the cord to wire in a permanent SP. I would certainly recommend at least the $379 jobby that camping world sells, no doubt available on the net for less. depending on where you are going to be parking and adequacy of electrical service, you might want to also consider an autoformer.

An autoformer senses when the voltage drops below a certain level and transforms the voltage back up-it is basically a 2 or 3 stage transformer with associated electronics, including some surge suppression capability. Generally you would put it into the circuit, then the HW50C or similar, then the coach. Your reel system has to have a place where it connects from the reel to the coach-put the two units between the reel and the coach. Look online for Frank's and Hughes autoformers to compare. The HW50C will simply shut off the power if the voltage drops too low, and the autoformer prevents that by boosting the voltage (unless it falls so far that even the boosted voltage doesn't meet the surge suppressor cut-off voltage).
If wired into the coach, does that not place the potential fire /melt down there, or is the product good enough to remove that risk ?
I assume it can be wired in . Like I said, it is on a reel so might be a little more work then some others.
What is an autoformer ?

well, I don't really worry about a "meltdown" myself. but I use a portable SP that I keep in a basement compartment when I hook it up to avoid possible theft.
