My 4th ex-wife ran off with a Brit...

I shall forever be in his debt.

By your logic, when we arrived in London just a few days after the Queen's Jubilee, and someone at our hotel pointed out that we'd missed all the festivities, I should have been shocked, outraged, and offended. Being me, I simply replied that it had taken us that long to clear customs at Heathrow. The actual truth was that I was traveling as soon as my job as a teacher in an American public high school would allow me to do so.

Please don't be offended. It's called making conversation.

Just making conversation - "Happy 4th of July"
Actually trying to be rude, ignorant, or obnoxious - "You Brits lost the war"

See the difference?

And I don't know the original poster but I thought his post was humorous not meant to insult US citizens, meaning why would a Brit be happy about losing rule over our nation. British humor is dry.

Maybe he will come back on and explain.

I guess the 4th is not a paid holiday in England. What a pity.

British humor. It was funny and the people just didn't get it right away.

Happy 4th of July! It just means, be happy today, the birthdate of our nation, when some pretty brave guys, under threat of execution, signed a document declaring the United States of American to be forever free from foreign rulers. It was the most courageous, selfless and noble of acts. We celebrate their vision and bravery and hope that we can one day live up to their ideals.

So on this day we exercise our freedom to enjoy life and the simple pursuit of happiness.

Had things turned out differently, the Declaration would have been the death sentence for each man who signed. We celebrate the day they put their very life on the line - literally - for our freedom.

And let's not forget the French who funded and armed our Revolutionaries. Drink dome French wine, eat some French bread and toast to old alliances.

Hey Steve,

Looks like you have been in this Country since 2005.

Me is thinking you have been wished a "Happy 4th of July" a couple of times before now.

The post topic, "What do they teach in schools today???" begs the question, "What did they teach in British schools".

The answer to the topic question is that the schools today teach that we have not been "the colonies" since either 1775(first shot) or 1783 (last shot), or somewhere in between. We celebrate the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence.
