Howdy folks~

After a week at Ridgway State Park, we hope to go a bit further south and west in Colorado and explore some more.

Question: which location would you recommend as a home base for 3 days or so - Echo Basin Ranch in Mancos or Priest Gulch RV up by Dolores?

Or are we missing a better option somewhere else in the area? Our target area for this part of the trip is roughly Durango west to UT state line and from roughly Dolores south to the NM state line.

Thanks!

Well, they're both woodsy, Priest Gulch gets high marks from a lot of folks, but it was not for us. Echo Basin may be better as a base camp. We needed WiFi and cell phone service to say in touch with our business, so moved from PG into Cortez KOA and liked it very much. Durango for dinner, Hovenweep the next day, Telluride the day after and a lot of places in between. We like to be where we can pop out to dinner, that sort of thing. PG and EB a little removed from town. Guess I would pick EB with your criteria, tho PG has a river running thru it. Pretty tight knit little group there.

Somehow that sounds a little ominous. Kind of a "Children of the Corn" sort of feel! Could you sort of elaborate a little?

And please cough up recommendations for dinner places for Durango (Cortez, too, if you got some)! Some serious eaters here! No jello!

As always we appreciate you sharing your experience!

Don't mean to sound ominous..it's just that it's pretty isolated at PG and a lot of folks come there year after year. It's about 20 miles to town, and a lot of folks hang around the campground and seem to know one another. It's a great camping spot, fishing and all that, just not our cup of tea. We like to base camp and we're gone all day. It's just a perception on my part, I'm sure.

For Italian, our favorite is Mama's Boy, north end of Durango.....in Cortez, do Tequila's for mexican....Margaritas are great!

Oh, and there's a pretty good b'fast place in Durango, similar to Bear Paw in St. George...can't bring the name to mind, but maybe DW will remember when and if I ever talk to her again (women!).

Thanks for the info. We also like to base camp so we would be gone all day too. I think I'll look closer at the Echo Basin option. Appreciate the dining tips!

Check out Mesa Verde RV Resort. Its on HWY 160 at entrance to Mesa Verde NP. We stayed there last Oct and was a great base camp. They also offer pet sitting if you need it. In Mancos try Ted's for fry bread. Just East of the traffic light on 160

For breakfast in Durango go to The Durango Diner, it is right on Main Street. More food that I can eat at reasonable prices. Mexican food in Durango, go to Francisco's...good food and GREAT Margaritas. Ariano's Northern Italian Restaurant makes a veal parm that is fantastic, kinda pricey but worth it. Steamworks is one of our favorite places. Also Mondays are hamburger night in Durango, go to the Palace...great burgers.
