New member and my first post.

My 1998 Coachman Catalina has a small sticker on the rear bumper that says........WARNING maximum direct and rotating load not to exceed 250 lbs........ Since I bought the tt used, I am not sure if it is factory or someone just stuck it on. Any ideas?

It sounds like the rating of the bumper is rated for no more than 250 lbs. I would think that that is for the pulling weight also.

I would think that is is NOT bike rack rated since it mentions "rotational load" which means the inertia of the bikes bouncing on bumps and dips will easily cause the bumper to be overloaded, especially if the bumper already carries a spare tire. Bikes would be carried well BEHIND the bumper causing increased leverage on the bumper.

I agree here.. the hitch weight and a couple of bikes could hit close to 100lbs. When they bounce though they could exhert a lot more than 100lbs of actual force. If that force exceeds the 250lbs bumper weight then there could be problems. Remember as well that bike racks stick out a bit from any bumper so it's like a giant lever which only adds to the force. Might get away with one bike or a couple kids bikes but not much more than that. The last hitch/bumper mounted bike rack I owned was 75lbs just for the rack.

mtnbiktn, my '98 Catalina (19 1/2') had the spare mounted on the rear wall -- if same as mine 'bumper' was also sewer hose holder. Never trusted it to do much - think sticker is about right. Carried my bikes on ladder rack or receiver hitch type of carrier. Used it to stabilize receiver hitch carry basket but nothing on its own.

It is the max weight that the bumper can hold. I have the same sticker on my TT.

I would play it safe and not mount anything more than a spare tire to the bumper without reinforcing the structure. Since it has a few years on it you better check all the welds as well.

I assume that you have a ladder to the roof attached at that point. That is what the sticker refers to.
