Mine work fine, a little slow and seems the water evaporates fast.If you fill the pot to 12 cups you will get 9 or 10 cups of coffee. Also they say to not leave the pot on the stove to keep the coffee hot. I usually pour mine into a carafee when its done.

I also have not read those links about coffee makers, and I have NOT tried the drip coffee maker you asked about, but being a coffee snob, I can't say enough good things about a French press for making coffee when we camp. In my mind, there's no other way to go!!!
We bought a large lexan one (50 oz, I think) made by JavaPress. I found it online a few years ago. We camp almost exclusively in primitive sites, so I needed something that did not rely on electricity. I don't even need a camp stove if I can get a fire going hot enough.

I've tried numerous coffee makers in my search for good camp coffee. I've had those you mentioned, battery operated, etc. I've found the old percolators still put out the best cup of coffee for me (and hot enough). I just pour it through something to filter stray grounds.

I have one of the Coleman I bough on clearence for $12.50 went to buy a regular pot and found it. A bit bulky but now that I've used it I like it. It does take it's time but makes great coffee.

Just got back from scout camp with my son. Someone brought that Coleman Coffee maker. It was terrific. Very good coffee and no loose grounds like you get with the perc. style.

I looked at those a while back. After some discussion I decided to stay with the old perc style. To keep the grounds to a minimum I put a drip style filter in the basket before adding the grounds. This works great and also helps in cleanup. Another trick I started using is to pour the coffee into a thermas after brewing. We like to drink a lot of coffee when camping. So now I have hot coffee in the thermas and I can start another pot when it starts to get low. Non-stop coffee!

I stick with iced coffee out here in the southwest, wife makes it at home and I just have a cup when I want it out of the cooler. Surely you've heard of StarBucks? That's where they ripped it off - Cafe Sua Da. Otherwise I just fill a filter-lined funnel of ground coffee with hot water and collect it in a cup for the hot stuff. Works great!
