Here at work we run two big Cat diesel generators, the boss has me cleaning out the maintenance shed and I found 3 of the batteries,
these are labeled 153-5710 group 4d 1400 cca i threw a volt meter to them and they read 10.7 5.9 and 1.4 they have been sitting for quite some time.
I have a charger with a recondition setting do you think any of these are salvageable?
they weigh 120 pounds each and are maintenance free lead batteries. any input will be greatly appreciated.

sorry about any formatting issues this is a lot to type on a iPhone

Sounds like you maybe to get a really good deal on them- so if they fit- it cant hurt to recondition and give them a try

Heck yah. Sounds like you might have at least 1 good one in the lot. The 8d Cat batteries are considered the shiznit if you can fit them or haul them. They weigh as much as the average DW, but will give you a lot less grief!

Be sure that you use a pulse charger that "desulfates" the plates as they charge. It may be the plates are not well either.

I would assume those are starting batteries and may not last long when deep cycled. If they are free and you will not end up at the chiropractor for lifting them then give it a whirl. I would suggest an equilization charge of 16 volts for a few hours after they are charged.

I agree with a previous poster. Sounds like you've got potentially 1 good 1400 cca unit. Keep fingers crossed, do a full desulfation. Just this one battery alone (if it proves to be good) would be the equivalent of at least several standard LA batteries...but then, there's the weight

Well from what I have read from Cat's website on these 153-5710 batteries they are both Deep Cycle and high cranking type batteries, what they consider their "PHO" Premium high output.

I brought the two highest reading batteries home and one has about 3 hours left on the 24hr desulfating task on the charger. I am working nights tonight so I wont be here to see how it turned out.

I did measure the space under the cabinet along the front wall they will both fit there I would just have to enclose them and vent them out the front or to the side in front of the wheel well.

I also found out that the core charge for these is about 60$ so if they both turn out bad I can always cash them in and put it towards a good group 31 battery

I 'll post back in the morning.

Well the first one is done with its desulfating and its showing 11.9 volts on the voltmeter I spoke to a guy at the parts dept. for Wagner (cat service and sales) and he said to follow up the desulfating charge with an equalize charge if my charger can( it will) and I should be in good shape.

the second one is started on its desulfating charge. hopefully I can slavage that one too.
