We will be going to South Fork, Colorado from Fort Worth, Tx.
I have been told that there is a pass on hwy. 160 that is very dangerous to pull a TT through.
My TT is a 04 FB25 Puma weight loaded 5200 lbs. my TV is a 06 Dodge 1500 with the towing package and 5.7 hemi.
Will this be safe to go through the pass?

Thank in advance for your help.
Dan

La Veta pass.... about 9,500ft... it's not that bad... especially downhill side for. Just watch temp gauge.

A good resource is Mountain Directory West; www.mountaindirectory.com and other sources.

The only pass you should encounter is La Veta like JFG mentioned, and it is one of the easiest passes in Colorado. You should have no problem. Just past South Fork is Wolf Creek Pass, however, if you're only going as far as South Fork, it won't be an issue. Enjoy the best part of Colorado, in my humble opinion.

The only pass you will be going over is North La Veta Pass. We hauled our 35 ft. 5th wheel over this pass last year. Do not recall any drastic conditions. Nice two lane road with wide shoulders. East to west, long grade up to the summit, shorter grade down. West of South Fork is the Wolf Creek pass. It's a little more challenging, but not dangerous. Hundreds of RVs and 18 wheelers go over both passes each day.

Agree with the above. Just returned from South Fork, pulling the 5er both ways over La Veta. Not a problem at all. Just keep a watch on your speed down each side and watch the signs for curves and reduced speeds.

LaVeta pass is very easy - you should be just fine. Good road and good width. I towed up there last year double (with the boat behind the 5er) and was in cruise all the way up. Now, Wolf Creek Pass to the west is a different matter. Great road but needs a lot of attention! Did that OK too - now I don't worry about any of them. Just watch your speed going down and you will be just fine.

If you are reluctant to drive and pull on mountain passes you might consider this route:

Highway 287 to Amarillo
Amarillo to Clines Corners on IH-40
Clines Corners to Alamosa on Highway 285
Highway 160 west Alamosa to South Fork

However, I agree that the LeVeta pass is not so bad.

I agree with the others. Just take your time, and it will be just fine. It takes awhile to get to the top, but its jsut a good steady pull. I pull a 38 ft. 5th and don't worry about it at all. The downhill side is easy, and not near as steep. Its great country to go to. Have a great time. I'm still hoping to get to Fun Valley at least once this summer.

Neither of the passes (La Veta or Wolf Creek) on 160 in CO should be called "very dangerous' for RVs! Who ever said that to you probably should not be driving an RV! La veta is very easy to pull in either direction. Wolf Creek IS a long pull and most Rvs will be going pretty slow, up and down in both directions but has very adequate passing lanes for those wanting/ able to pass you. But not dangerous! Worthy of some caution - OK! I get pretty tired of t hose folks who scare others - or try to.
