Howdy!
We're traveling in Alaska with our two dogs 12 year old Poodle and a almost 6 month old Dachshund puppy. The other day while on a walk in the Anchorage area we ran into a lot of mosquito's. Within 10 to 15 minutes noticed small whelps on the Dachshund puppy. Within another 10 to 15 minutes his eye were swollen shut and nose and lips also swollen. We gave him a half of benadryl and and rush him to the nearest Vet. They gave him a shot of benadryl and a steriod shot. Within 30 minute the swelling had stared to go down. Within a few hours he was back to normal.
Vet could not be sure what caused the reaction but said they had seen it a couple of other times this year. The only thing we encounter different were the mosquito's which we've seen before but not this bad.
Does anyone know of a mosquito repellent that can be used on puppies that is safe (he licks and chews on everything). Someone advised to use a house spray that is a good insect repellent for flies and mosquito's.
We are also now carrying some children liquid benadryl with us just in case of another incident.

K9 Advantix repels fleas, ticks and mosqitoes, supposedly kills the mosquitoes before they bite. I'm pretty sure it can be used on puppies, but call your vet and ask first to be sure. I do know that it is NOT safe to use on cats.

Howdy yourself!
It sounds like y'all are on quite the adventure!
Please do not use a "household" type repellent on your dog. You can spray it around the area and use it on around their bedding and let dry before your dog sleeps on it, but don't spray it directly on the dogs.
At 6 months & 12 years of age it should be safe to use the spot treatments like Advantage or Frontline on both of your dogs. Since mosquito bites are responsible for the larva that becomes heartworm(s) I hope your dogs are on a heartworm preventative. If not, a simple blood test is required before starting the preventative, to make sure there are not any heartworms present. Since we live in a mosquito prone area our dogs stay on it year round.
It's always a good idea to carry Benedryl along when traveling. Just be careful not to give him too much, it can make them very sleepy.... and in some cases dry their skin/coat out too much causing itchiness & irritations.
Good luck and enjoy your adventures!

Frontline and Advantage don't repel mosquitoes, fleas and ticks only.

Sorry for the confusion Mia, when I think of pests I think of fleas & ticks as well as mosquitoes. I was giving examples of products I have experience with including heartworm preventative.....and sharing that the age of the youngest of the OP's dogs wouldn't be a problem with those two products. I also talked about a safer usage for a spray repellent since I've personally used it that way.
I don't use K-9 Advantix because of the documented cases of adverse reactions to it, so I can't speak from experience on that product. I have enough trouble with vaccination reactions with one of our dogs so I am very careful about ALL dosages of medications and preventatives. I time everything, including topical solutions & heartworm preventative, weeks apart to keep from inducing too many chemicals into their systems.
Come to think of it, there is also a citronella spray that might be useful.... a more "natural" repellent, no DEET. I use a citronella lotion on myself when the nasty skeeters get bad around here. We don't camp this time of year without 3 or 4 citronella candles and tiki torch.

Cat,
I've heard of some reactions too, but mostly of slight hair loss at the application site, and temporary itching. But I know what you mean about subjecting them to chemicals .......
ChiefNeon,
Some friends with a very sensitive dog use Avon's Skin so Soft with very good results. Mix one capful with about a gallon of water and spray it on. Hope this helps.

Since you now know that he has reactions, I would ask your vet to give you a script for an epi-pen to keep on board for him. And what I did was bring a bottle of Childrens Benydril to my vet and I had the VET figure out the right dosage for all my dogs based on each ones weight. I keep the info on the bottle and a syringe(no needle) taped to it. So if i need it in a hurry it's there and ready.
That stuff is real easy to overdose.
Almost sounds like he got bit by some small bees or wasp, to have that type of reaction. If my dog gets bit he has the same symptoms as yours did and if not treated right away they can stop breathing because of the swelling. Specially if you see the nose and face swelling. Those Doxies are low to the ground which makes them easy pickens for the insects. I am allergic to mosquitoe bites so I know how he must of felt.
Good thing you were near a vet to help him. Glad he's ok.
Here's what I use for bug spray, IMHO works great and safe.
Not cheap but does work.
For the younger & smaller dogs I spray it on a rag and wipe them down.

Hi Chief Neon,
We go for daily walks in the woods and around a lake with our 6-yr-old beagle, Angel. I do a couple of things for mosquito control: I spray Off Skintastic (family formula) on the back of her head and down the middle of her back where I am sure she can't reach with her tongue. (I spray us, too!) I also tie a new Bounce fabric softener sheet to Angel's harness, to my hat and my DH's belt loop because I read that mosquitoes don't like the scent and will stay away. So far, so good. We're keeping the mosquitoes at bay and I'm not sure if the Bounce is part of the solution or if it just looks like we're all wearing big white bows, but it sure does smell good when its breezy outside. Hope this helps!

Well, I live in the middle of a 10 acre Carolinian Forest so I have had a little experience with this. You can try using Avon Skin so Soft mixed with water and in a spray bottle. 1 part SSS to 2 parts water. Shake well and spray on dog. Spray into hands and wipe your hands over their head and ears. It works ok and your dog will smell great, but does not seem to repel flies all to well. It does seem to keep the mosquitoes at bay though.
What I find works a little better is a horse product called "Wipe". Just pour it into a rag and wipe all over their bodies. Keep the rag and store it in a ziplock bag for future use. It usually lasts for a couple of days before you need to re apply it. It keeps the flies away also but it does have a bit of a "chemical" smell. It also costs quite a bit more than the SSS. Maybe try the Avon stuff first and see if it does the trick for you, then if not, try the WIPE.
Good luck.

You know I also use Skin So Soft....on myself and the young ones when we camp with my grand nieces & nephews, never thought about using it on the dogs. Hummmmmm may have to give that a try on the dogs if the skeeters are bad.
