I bought two new BAL jacks to add to our TT to take some of the bounce out of it. Fortunately I followed the directions and test-fitted the jacks with c-clamps before drilling the frame and mounting, as it revealed the reason for my question below.
Our TT has a moulding which runs about 5" below the frame along most of the side. If I mount the BAL to the frame as is, when I fold the jack up it will hit the moulding and not fold completely. To solve this, I need to mount the BAL about 3" below the frame, which will leave sufficient clearance. Note that even with this 3" drop there is still plenty of ground clearance, so jack dragging is not a concern here.
To give me the clearance I need I was thinking of mounting a 3" thick block of treated lumber on the jack, then drilling through the block and the frame and bolting all this to the TT. Any thoughts on this or other suggestions?
I would not use wood as a spacer for this purpose. I would have a welding shop get some square tubular steel and weld it to the jack and then the frame. Take a look at most Fleetwood trailers to see how they do it.
The other jacks are bolted directly to the frame, and clearance is not an issue as the moulding does not run all the way to the front and back of the TT.
