I purchased my new HHR 3 weeks ago and will be towing it behind my
Pace Arrow. The car is great and it is a stick shift. Just found out
that I cannot tow a small trailer with the stick, only the auto is
able to tow a trailer. Has anyone found any info on this? I do not
want to void my warranty by installing a hitch on the back, but do
want to tow a teardrop trailer on some small trips to save fuel
expense. Any Ideas?

I installed a hitch on my wife's Subaru, ... told the dealer it was for bicycles. No problem.

What would you say when they ask about the brake controller and taillight wiring?

Should have read the owners manual BEFORE purchase.

that's what my owner's manual says...do not tow a trailer with the manual trans. Even with the auto, the limit is 1,000lbs...assuming that it is only the driver. Manual says that for additional passengers or cargo, to subtract that weight from the 1,000lbs.
