I've tried to be nice by changing lanes to let them in but then they pace me (for the shade or for whatever reason) and block me from getting back, and soon I have fast movers riding my bumper. I've found it easier to let them deal with their own merge woes! I try to be nice, but I don't move anymore.

If I can not move to another lane, I hold my speed and let the merger adjust, I just make sure I'm running at posted speed. Slowing down or speeding up will just mess up the merging traffic as well as traffic around you!!!
I do flash my lights( ) if they can merge ahead of me, 9 out of 10 times, they tend to speed up as a "thank you' gesture for letting them in

As an aside, I've heard (but not confirmed) that on Arizona freeways, the merging traffic has a right of way. I kinda pooh-poohed that, but the person who told me about it then pointed out the complete lack of "Merge" (or "Yield") signs on the freeways down there.
Not true. The person coming on the freeway in Az.does not have the right of way. Look again and you will see all kinds of yield signs directed to the traffic coming on.
Many entry ramps in the Phoenix area even have stop lights that are in use during rush hour. At that time every car has to stop for the red light and can only go when the light turns green. Then the guy behind goes thru the same routine before he can enter the freeway. The timing of the lights is coordinated with the traffic movement.

Yep air horns are just great for waking people up. They come up the on ramp with their head up a place where the sun dont shine. A little blast and they jump out of thier skin.

It's up to the guy on the onramp to merge with traffic, mainline traffic has the right of way. Thats according to california vehicle code.

Seems you and I are the only ones in Cal that know that hahah.
I can't begin to count the times I've been flipped off and cussed at because I didn't move over and let someone in. Sorry pal, that ain't my job! I maintain my speed and they can't figure out they need to go a little faster or a little slower. The ones that really crack me up are the ones that run up even with you, match your speed, and then keep looking over at you as if to say "let me in". If there is a reason someone is having a hard time merging I will do what I can to let them in. But if they can't merge because they're just plain stupid I'll run them into the dirt everytime. Been there, done that, and will do it again.

here is an exert out of MI motor vehicle code. basically, cars on the freeway have the right of way and cars coming on must yield if they cant merge.
Question: When merging onto a freeway who has the right-of-way?
Answer: MCL 257.649(7) governs this question. A driver entering a roadway from a roadway that is intended for and constructed as a merging roadway, and is plainly marked at the intersection with the appropriate merge signs, shall yield the right-of-way to traffic upon the roadway that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard and shall adjust their speed to enable them to merge safely with through traffic. Simply put, a driver merging onto a freeway must yield to traffic upon the freeway. It must be noted that traffic on the freeway cannot intentionally block a driver from merging by either speeding up or slowing down.

The driver in the continuous lane ALWAYS has the right of way.
The driver in the lane that ends ALWAYS has to yield.
This is true whether a road is narrowing, another road is merging, or a lane is entering the roadway.
Of course all general traffic laws have rare exceptions which may be posted otherwise. If so, obey the signs.
I wish all drivers understood this basic concept, traffic would flow better and would be less irritating.
Whenever I get flipped off, I blow the other driver kisses. Confuses the h_ll out of them.
Slowing to allow someone to enter creates a hazardous situation for the drivers behind you. Don't do it! You are risking your life and the lives of those behind you. You may think you are being courteous, you are not, you are creating a hazard. Change lanes if it can be done safely and do whatever you need to do to avoid an accident. Do not make a habit of slowing to allow another vehicle to merge.

I look at it like this...
At the top or start of the merge lane there is a little sign... It says, YIELD. Most everyone knows and understands what this means... I hold my lane, maintain my speed. Sure... They blast around me at the last second, show me thier IQ and tell me about my mother and that my parents were never married. I just wave back and smile...
As far as road rage goes... If its ridiculously hazardous, the DW will note and jot down the particulars and call *55 or whatever emergency # for the state we are in and make a complaint. I have found that most folks that drive like that will drive for MILES before cooling down. 1 incident, the person was stopped by HP and we passed them as they were being "Investigated"... See??? It all works out..
Happy and safe travels!!!

That is about as stupid as the signs on both sides of one lane bridges that say Yield To Oncoming Traffic.
