Made this trip many years ago and all I have to say is watch out for their rotaries or what ever they now call them. There is only one road out to Cape Cod as I remember and traffic is very heavy. Have a nice trip and enjoy. We did except for the traffic.

Yes, the best route to Cape Cod is the one in the opposite direction of traffic.
Sadly, little can be done to fix the roads to/from the Cape, so you will likely have to "grin and bear it" as they say.
Have a nice trip and allow for plenty of time. If you can leave on a low traffic day (mid-week), then do so! If you are heading there on a Friday or leaving on a Sunday you are in for traffic.

I would plan to arrive on the Cape on a weekday if you can pull that off. The tourists come in on Friday night and Saturday morning to afternoon so avoid those times. And, try to avoid leaving the Cape on Sunday afternoon or esp. evening. The backups of cars to the bridges can be several miles long. Of course, I am talking about during the summer months. The Fall season is perfect on the Cape. The weather is perfect and the tourists are gone by then.
No matter how you go, you will still have to take route 28 or route 3 depending on where on the Cape you want to end at. They are your only options. Route 28 goes over the Bourne Bridge and Route 3 goes over the Sagamore Bridge.
The Sagamore Bridge does not have rotaries or "roundabouts" so that might be the best one to go over IMO. The highway was just completed where they removed the roundabouts. It is much better now. The roundabouts in at the Bourne Rotary can be nerve racking for people who have not done much driving on such.

rte 84 thru Port Jervis N.Y. into Ct. and on to 90 (MA.pike.) to rte. 495 all the way to the Bourne Bridge which will take you right on to rte. 28.
Rte 495 changes to rte 25 in Wareham Ma. but it is all the same rte.

We have driven many times over the years from the New Jersey shore to the Cape to visit Mom and Dad. We always take the Garden State Parkway to it's northern end to connect with I287 over the Tappan Zee Bridge. We then pick up I95 across Connecticut and Rhode Island to join with I195 in Providence. I195 ends at Route 25, which goes over the Bourne Bridge to the Cape. We always got off at exit 2 just before the bridge and took route 6 up to the Sagamore Bridge.
We always avoid buying gas in Connecticut as their gas tax is really high.
Have to agree with the other posters that the traffic on the Cape in the summer is a bear.

I agree with Joe - nice to get rid of that old rotary (as they call 'em in Mass.) at the Sagamore Bridge, but I wonder if this poster has been around long enough to remember that rotary that used to spin you off to Hyannis, where exit 6 is now on Route 6... used to go around there in Billy's almost new '54 Chevy convertible on some of those umforgettable teen-age trips to the Cape...
Still a rotary ouy in Orleans, though...

dan-mar nailed it. If you need to get to the sagamore bridge area, cross the bourne bridge and look for the connecting road ( the name escapes me ). This road will travel along the canal and bring you to the sagamore bridge. Try to avoid route 128 ( I95 ) at all costs.

Thanks for the input, I've done a few Maine/bar harbor trips and the traffic can be a PITA. I guessing I will have to deal the the Bourne bridge, the campground is Bayview in Bourne.
