My slide will not operate with the engine running, it is a safty feature to keep someone from operating the slide while going down the road. A slide motor draws no where near what a starter motor draws and you don't start your generator to start the motor do you! Oh wait you can't start your generator because you have to have your engine running or your gen starter will burn up. Man, this is getting confusing. How do those trailer guys do it that don't have either?

Our slides WILL NOT operate when the engine is running. Period. They operate on battery power only. They will operate when plugged in to shore power but are still battery powered.

My 29 RK Laredo has one battery. I never think of pluggigng it in or hooking to the truck to use the slide as long as the gbatt has some juice. The slide motor runs like the wind.

My old Wilderness was a different story. It was geared so high that sometimes I helped by pushing on the slide

If it is geared right and runs free, we are dealing with urban legend.

My slides will not operate with the main engine running either. We have two slides and I almost always operate them without being plugged in, never a problem. What does your operator manual say?

Getting my slides to operate is fairly simple to understand, as you can see from the attached photo Slide Instructions.

Our slides will not operate when engine is running; same as Joy's. We DO generally operate the slides when on shore power.

Most OEM's want the RV plugged into shore power or have the APU (if you have one) On, so you have GOOD 12 volt power from the Converter or Inverter/Charger whichever you have on the RV. This will make sure you have good 12 volt supply if the batteries are low. Some RV's (motorhomes) have an Ignition lock out, so IF the chassis engine is ON, then the slides will not operate. This is NOT true of all motorhomes. Tiffin (Allegro) 2006 and newer require the Engine Key to be ON or the engine running to operate the slide rooms. There is no hard fast rule. But for the original poster, National used a Powergear system and you do NOT have to have the Engine On or Off. You can operate the slide room on battery power on the National with no problem, unless the coach batteries are low/bad. Doug

That is exactly how my Power Gear slides work. (see the Link above for slide Instructions) I already replied to this post but forgot to add, You also have to have the parking brake applied on the Power Gear
Slide on my southwind before it will work, So that kind of prevents someone from trying to employ the slides while the engine is running and you are driving down the road. You don't drive down the road with the parking brake on. So to the original poster, do your homework and do what you think will work best for you, you have received so many variations of what will work, what will not work, engine running, engine off, ignition on, ignition off, But I will bet that all of them require that the parking brake be ON. Good luck

I have electric slides and my manual says to have the engine running when you are operating the slides so that's what I do. It has worked fine for 4 1/2 years, so I guess I will keep on doing it.

Slideout motors will typically draw 50-100 amps DC so you are giving your batteries a real load test if not running the engine!

OK I do not have a big honking DP MH but my trailer electric gear driven slide draws 10 amps, 18 amps at stall. 50-100 seems like a lot even for an electric/hydraulic.
