If you tow with a Chev/GMC 6L gas engine:
1) How much weight do you tow?
2) Do you tow mainly on flat ground or also over mountain passes?
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate?
4) What mileage do you get towing?
5) What mileage when not towing?

Did tow about 9000lbs

Pretty much all
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate?
I didn't feel so. I wouldn't want another 6.0.
4) What mileage do you get towing?
6-8
5) What mileage when not towing?
13-14

Approx. 8,000 lbs.
2) Do you tow mainly on flat ground or also over mountain passes?
Mainly flat with a few big hills.
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate?
I have not pulled in the mountains and very few steep hills. I really have not had an issue with not enough power.
4) What mileage do you get towing?
I tow in OD with the tow button on averaging 7 mpg.
5) What mileage when not towing?
Not too impressive, but I get 10 unloaded.

1) How much weight do you tow?
8200 lbs
2) Do you tow mainly on flat ground or also over mountain passes?
For 4 years I towed over mountain passes from Northern California to Tacoma, WA. Last summer we towed from Cowlitz County WA to Indiana and back mostly by I-90 although we did pull the Teton Pass on the way back.
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate?
For the most part the engine is adequate, the Teton Pass had me pull over twice on a hot day to make it to the top. Ours is one of the first 6 liters that came out in '99. We bought it new, it now has 149500 miles on it and it has been so trouble free that I would replace it in a heartbeat. I would emphasize the dependability and low repair issues of the engine over the speed of climbing mountain passes.
4) What mileage do you get towing?
6 - 8
5) What mileage when not towing?
14 - 15

I like my 6L. I tow flats and mountains, I have never been one to drive up hill as fast as I do on the flats, I take my time and hold her steady at 2500 rpm's. she does what I ask her to do. I have gotten 15.3 on the freeways empty doing 75 mph all day long, towing I have gotten as good as 11.4 mpg and as bad as 7. I think it is a good engine, the new 5.7 is more horse power than my 02 and would be interesting to see how well they pull.

I pull 9000#, almost always over passes, some of them quite high. Just got back from Utah where I ran up every grade with ease. It was 112 degrees through the desert and I ran cool the whole way never shutting of the AC, just kept my eye on the tranny temp and coolant both did great. I got 8.5 mpg's pulling 1200 miles with lots of climbing, kept it at 60 mph most of the time. Around town I get about 12 mpg, on the highway 15-17. I love the truck, and am quite happy with the 6.0, the new 6 speed is fantastic!

I just traded in my 2005 2500HD Ext Cab 6.0 w/4.10s:
1) How much weight do you tow?
Around 9500 pounds
2) Do you tow mainly on flat ground or also over mountain passes?
No mountains, but plenty of hills
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate?
The engine loved to rev. You can't be afraid to run 3500-4000 RPM up the hills all day long
4) What mileage do you get towing?
7-8 MPG with my fiver
5) What mileage when not towing?
12-13 MPG mix of highway/city. Never better than 14 even straight highway

4.10 axle
1) How much weight do you tow?
5,000 lb trailer + truck with people and gear are ~7,000 lbs = 12,000 lbs combined vehicle weight.
2) Do you tow mainly on flat ground or also over mountain passes?
Hills - sea level->3,000 ft. . . On rare occasion mountains (S side Mt Hood)
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate?
Yes for what we pull. Wouldn't want a trailer over 7,000-7,500 lbs.
4) What mileage do you get towing?
10
5) What mileage when not towing?
12 city, 14+ highway (just got 15.6 this weekend)
