If you tow with a Chev/GMC 6L gas engine:
--My wife's 2001 2500HD has the 6.0L gasser
1) How much weight do you tow?
--I have towed 11,000 +or- before.
2) Do you tow mainly on flat ground or also over mountain passes?
--Rolling hills, mainly foothills of MO Ozarks.
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate?
--It's not my 8.1L but it does fine.
4) What mileage do you get towing?
--9~10mpg
5) What mileage when not towing?
--16 hiway as low as 11~12 in town.
Check out this story to see how the 6.0L Chevy stacks up against the other brands.

2) Do you tow mainly on flat ground or also over mountain passes? Mostly flat. . . not to the mountains yet, but been in some decent hills
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate? Oh yeah. . . just let it rev up and work. The power is made high in the RPMs. People who think the engine is straining don't understand that it's made to run up there all day long without breaking a sweat.
4) What mileage do you get towing? Around 8 mpg
5) What mileage when not towing? Around 13 mpg. . . 11-12 if I'm heavy city. . . 14 if I'm relaxed on the highway. I have 4.10 gears and 285/75/R16 tires that hurt me some. When I need new tires I'll go down to 265's.

--Flats are great, mountians aren't bad, don't be affraid to get some rev's on the tach!! This engine love's to rev.
3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate?
--It's not a Duramax but I didn't pay 4K extra for the engine
4) What mileage do you get towing?

Tow about 7000 pounds, with another 500 or so pounds of cargo in the Burb
I get about 9-10 mpg towing in 3rd at 60-70 mph, it will not tow that weight in overdrive
I haven't checked the mileage not towing, b/c I'm usually towing with it
I have towed that same weight with an '01 2500HD 4x4 with 6.0 and 4.10 gears and it towed the weight much better and would tow in overdrive and got about 10.5mpg while towing at 70mph in overdrive.
I am pleased with the power, but it's no diesel, you can't be afraid of the rpm's. All towing was a mix of flat AL and TN mountains.

3) If steep hills, is that engine adequate? The engine loved to rev. You can't be afraid to run 3500-4000 RPM up the hills all day long
4) What mileage do you get towing? 7-8 MPG with my fiver
5) What mileage when not towing? 12-13 MPG mix of highway/city. Never better than 14 even straight highway
Ditto! I also just got rid of ours in January and went the diesel route. Not so much for the power issue, but the mileage issue.

Mine was more to upgrade from an extended cab to a Crew Cab. I'm a Realtor, and I always hated hauling clients in my extended cab, and then we found out we were having our first baby (which is due on Friday), and I wasn't going to deal with cramming a car seat into the back of an extended cab. So we started looking at crew cabs, and figured we may as well get the diesel as long as we were upgrading (don't tell my wife, but I don't mind the upgrade to leather, 6 disc changer, bucket seats, memory seats/mirrors, Bose stereo, heated seats, etc either!).
Towed a 30 ft. Alfa and 28 ft. Wildcat. Both trailers 7.5k to 8k lbs.
Towed from central Texas to Colorado mountains.
MPG towing 6.5 - 7.5
MPG solo 10 - 12 Best of 12.5 once.
Had to lock in 3rd gear and 3k plus rpms to maintain 55-65 mph. Would drop 45-55 on hills.
Definetly did not have enough power for anything over 5k lbs in a 5th wheel format. It could tow my old 5k lbs TT fine, but not either of the two 5th wheels.
I would never own another one again. Either buy a "regular" 1/2 ton with tow package and size trailer accordingly, or buy a 3/4 or 1 ton with a diesel.
Even with diesel fuel costing more now, my current diesel truck is considerably cheaper on fuel than the old 6.0L. Only thing cheaper would be a regular 1/2 ton.

Keep in mind that the newer 6.0 gas engines have quite a bit more horsepower and torque than your 2001 did, plus, the new body style have the 6-speed auto.
