I understand that the highway from Whitehorse to Tok is not good right now. Has anyone heard if the highway will be done or getting close to being done by the 1st part of August? We took the Top of the World Highway coming to Alaska and don't want to take it back, we are still cleaning the dirt out of the fiver.

Various parts of that section of the highway have been under construction for some 15 years now, and the project (the Shakwak Project) has 3 or 4 years to go yet.

We just traveled from Tok to Whitehorse. The highway is in fair to good condition if you take your time. We experienced no problems. Hope this helps.

Plan on doing a max of 45 mph. If there are stretchs where you can do more than that, count yourself lucky.

I went through W/B about 5 days ago. The road is rough in places, but most are marked with flags. Just be sure to slow down to 45 to 50 for these areas. There is also a 47 mile stretch of construction with pavement breaks the whole way east of Tok. Everytime I got up to 55, I'd have to slow down for another break. I didn't think this area was too bad, but did come upon a diesel pusher going E/B that had removed the bumper from his toad . Was it related? Beats me...

It's not the greatest but like others have stated just take your time and slow down. There where times that we got passed by every thing but a bike. With our rig 25 to 35 was the best speed for the frost damaged areas and after you get tired of trying to go 55 just to slow down again 45 worked out the best.

I write this from an rv park in Delta Junction after 3 days of driving the Tetlin to DJ section of The Alaska Highway.
The road from Whitehorse to Haines Junction is slow with many frost heaves. 40 -
45 mph is a good speed.
The section from Haines Junction to the Alaska border was either under construction ( some sections with pilot vehicles) or very slow due to frost heaves. We averaged 40 mph.
The section from the Alaska border to Tok was slow, MUDDY and under construction for 47 miles. We averaged 30 mph

Slow and steady wins the race on this trip.
In spite of the rainy weather and the road work we are having a FANTASTIC time.
Safe travels to all.
Brenda

We just did it last week and it's definitely the worst stretch of the Alaska Highway. That said, the worst thing about it is that you have to drive slowly. I'd say that we averaged no more than 35-40. So, if you go into it with that expectation, you'll arrive in Tok and recall it was a beautiful, relaxing, 6 hour drive.
Definitely well worth the result when you get to Alaska, absolutely beautiful!
Good luck,
Fred

Came back thru it and it was better earlier in the year--if your vehicle isn't in top shape,it'll eat it up and spit it out on the 5-6 mile 8% grades and Mountains. My truck is pleading with me to take it back to the midwest where they just don't happen.Gotta get a Diesel that LOVES MOUNTAINS.They're just to long for my Gas engine pullin a 5th twice its weight.Wish somebody would have got that thru my thick head before we left.It hurt my truck!!!
