Have a 1999 Allegro Bay 34 ft with v10 triton and 4r100 Tranny. Installed an external Filter and Temp guage........only reads 140 -150 degrees F. Any one out there with same setup? Seems thats low..........maybe my sensor or guage is off. Unit weighs about 24K loaded.
Thanks Matt

We normally run about 160-170 degrees on level roads, on a return trip last week from Maine going up a long grade north of Burlington on I-91 Trans temp hit 183 degrees tops, did not thing that was too bad.
At the same time the Engine coolant/water temp went up to 220 before the fan/clutch kicked in and it dropped down to 198 before reaching the crest of the hill.
On readings are taken from our Scan Guage II, great toy/tool.

Matt, Where in the fluid flow path is the external filter? If it is in the line to the cooler, then I would expect higher readings. If it is in the return line from the cooler it has been cooled and you will never know how hot it really got. My sensor is in the test port on the side of the transmission so I too never know if the fluid is hotter in other places. If your tranny runs fine at those temps and the fluid does not smell burnt, then just watch for variations and don't worry about the actual figure. jmho, lou

Your reading will depend on where you take it. Did you use the test port, pan or somewhere else? You want to use a place where the fluid is at its hottest to get a true reading. Seems everyone has a different opinion on where that is. I used the test port because it was the easiest and the reading is close. It gave me a idea of what the tranny was doing.

It all depends on WHERE the sensor is located. Most of the time the sensor on the 4-100R is located in the test port inside the pan and temps can run anywhere from 150 to 220 degrees depending on ambient temperature and how hard you're working the tranny. It could run HOTTER if the sensor is located in the line TO the cooler and less than that if in the line FROM the cooler.

Ditto. Our F250 has the same tranny and my sensor uses the test port. Generally 150-160 degrees with the auxiliary cooler installed. Highest I've seen was pulling up a grade with 15mph curves, got up to 200deg. Glad I had the cooler.

I've got a gauge hooked into the test port and have since added the scan gauge which gives me a reading from where ever Ford has their sensor. The gauge reads 130 in easy going and cooler ambients and as high as 190 climbing a steep grade in the summer. The scan gauge reads about 15 degrees higher.
The cooler is whatever Winny put in.

1. 34 ftr. that weighs 24K? Ny old 33 ftr. GBM on Ford chassis weighed 16,500 on the road. Do you carry a load of bricks?
My new Fiesta 33 ftr. weighs 17,600 (two slides) on the road.
2 Gauge on inline filter is not reading tranny temp -- I had a sensor in the correct position in the pan and the gauge read a max of 165 in 110 degree weather while pulling long grades and A/C running.
Normal cruising in 90 degree temps it read about 120.
It's all about that good cooling system in the Ford chassis!
