What is the best route to take.We have four weeks. Want to see Mount Rushmore then to Cody, WY then to Denver CO. and any thing cool along the way.

Avoid the Denver bypass as the tolls are very expensive. I came in from Kansas on I-70 and went to the north to I-25. The tolls totaled about $25.00 for a class c pulling a Jeep for about 30 miles.

How far do you intend to drive each day? At 500 miles per day it will take you about five days of hard driving to get there and five days back. Are you sure you want to make that long a trip in four weeks?

I would work my way up to take I70 to Indianapolis, then I74 to pick up I80 at Davenport to I29 just north of Omaha up to I90 at Sioux Falls. Not much "cool" to see before getting to South Dakota. Once there, the Corn Palace in Mitchell is worth an hour. Take the loop road through Badlands National Park for a few hours. If the timing is right, the KOA at Interior just outside the Badlands is a good overnight. After seeing Rushmore, head up to Devil's Tower for a few hours then get back on I90 to Buffalo and take route 16 over the Bighorn Mountains then route 14 from Greybull to Cody. If possible, plan on a full day at the really good Western Museum in Cody then take the east entrance to Yellowstone. After your time at Yellowstone, head south to Grand Teton National Park for a few days if possible. Then take route 26/287 to I80 to I25 to Denver.

It's hard to improve on Cloud Dancer's suggestions. I'd probably head for I-90 sooner, as it doesn't have the traffic that I-80 has, but that's minor. If you stay on I-80 across Iowa, you'll want to go straight when you come to I-680 west of Shelby, IA and take I-680 to I-29. I-80 turns southwest to Omaha at the the I-680 intersection and would be quite a few extra miles for no reason.
And I hope you plan to see more attractions while in the Black Hills than just Mount Rushmore. Lots of interesting sites in the Hills.
The last time I was in VA I drove through much of PA -- past Pittsburgh -- to I-80. It was a nice drive, but I'm not qualified to say what's best back that-a-way.

You'll pass near Devil's Tower (mountain from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" movie") in NE Wyoming on your way from Mount Rushmore to Yellowstone. Also a little further north is Little Big Horn (Custard's last stand) in Montana. We enjoyed these stops!

I guess every responder missed your "need' to get to Denver. Is this a real need or? I would stay away from Denver during the Demo. convention week!
Beside - as others have hinted - Denver is quite a ways out of your way - especially with your limited time.
