I picked up a current story on the formaldehyde issue and Katrina victims who have a lawsuit brewing. It seems some former employees are involved in the suit now too. This comes during hard economic times for the RV manufacturers. I hope this doesn't cause a few more to shut their doors for good.

(If my link doesn't work, the story is available at CBSNEWS.com)

I saw that story on the news this evening. I wish one of those employees had spoken out earlier. Workers were passing out right there on the production room floor and no one said anything? I guess they were afraid they would be fired but still, that's pretty bad.

Too bad FEMA didn't have the levels of formaldehyde spec'd out when they ordered the original units. They are getting better but.....they got what they bought.

Be careful what you wish for. Next time it might be you or your family needing help.

I saw the news report this evening. The prime target was HR. They also were the largest supplier.

I believe that it was a combination of things that made for this situation.
First, never before has there been a demand for so many units to be built in such a short time. This made for a shortage of materials, especially those that some aging and curing helps the outgassing process, like flooring materials, etc.
Second, like any government contract, there was a rigid set of specifications and I am sure that those were met.
Third, They were caught between a rock and a hard place. Either build them with the materials that they could get their hands on, or wait until better were available. That would mean people without any home, waiting much longer in shelters.

I believe there were a lot of lessons learned by this unfortunate experience. Now the existing trailers can be properly vented and outgassed so they can be used in the future with no ill effects. Unless congress decides to have them all destroyed.
