Noobies going on our first long trip in our new Lance camper and GMC truck in the middle of August. Destination- Glacier NP.
Do we need to make reservations at one of the campgrounds? Only 2 take reservations as most seem to be first come first serve. Any recommendations? We don't care about hookups, just enjoying the park.
We haven't decided whether to "offload" the camper while there but maybe we will to drive the going to the sun road.Looking at the park map, which end of the road is the better campground? We're coming from the San Francisco area, any recommendations on a route?
Thanks everybody.

Yes reservations are necessary to be sure you have a camp site. There are limits on the size vehicles allowed on the going to the sun highway. Check with the park when you make your reservations. The campgrounds on either side are as good as NP campgrounds get. Good luck

We stayed just outside the west gate at Sundance RV park. It was reasonable in cost and much more comfortable than the in-park campground. We did not have reservations. We just arrived and got a spot.

The Going to the Sun rd is very narrow. Had to pull in the mirrors on my Ford F250. Very beautiful!! Enjoy.

I've stayed on both sides of Glacier and much prefer the east side. While the west side has more commercial campgrounds and town, the east side is closer to Many glacier Valley, Two Medicine Valley and Waterton Lakes NP in Alberta. Many who stay on the west side miss out on these wonderful attractions. The going To The Sun Road is the same from either side.
There are two commercial campgrounds on the east side in St Mary. One is a KOA, the other (Johnson's) is family run. Both are convenient to the east gate. Just inside the park, St Mary campground is one of the most popular in the park. Check the website to see if they take reservations. If you want to stay at one of the commercial parks, make reservations.

We just came down from Glacier.I believe you can make reservations at a couple of campgrounds in the park.St Mary's was in a very pretty location.I saw some trucks on "Going to the sun" with campers. It was slow going behind them as they maneuvered by other vehicles. If you want ambiance with amenities I recommend mountain meadows in Hungry horse.

Since we're coming from the west, we are thinking two days at Fish Creek (reservations),one day in the middle-Sprague or Avalanche, then
Waterton in Canada? What do you think?

We're heading to Glacier National Park in the next few days. We're in Yellowstone right now. From what we've read, it looks like we won't be able to pull our Airstream travel trailer over the Going to the Sun Road. Our current plan is to stay in Two Medicine Campground (no reservations) and stay a few days to hike & fish & do ranger programs.
Then move up to one of the other campground on the east side of the park and do the same. Drive down south along the southern end of the park over to the western side and explore over there.
We post a daily blog so if you are interested in photos, etc. you are more than welcome to check out our website. We are hoping for bears, bears, bears!

We were at Glacier two years ago (and Yellowstone,) and the vehicle length on GTTS road is either 21 or 27 feet. I don't remember which. Don't tow your rig. I would say the same for YNP although it is permissable - you will just miss too much.
