Just a reminder to those of you with a California Drivers license. In Ca. you are required to have an RV endorsement on your Ca. license to tow an RV with a weight of 10,000# or greater. The endorsement is free the test is not difficult and you can get all the information at your local DMV office or on line. Let's all take the time and get legal.
It is only an issue if you get stopped by the CHP. They can and will cite you and have the authority to call for a tow, as you are not properly licensed. If you get in an accident, no matter who's at fault, with out the endorsement you will be in big dodo! Remember you are not properly licensed to tow your RV over 10,000#.
You local DMV may not know what you are talking about when you show up and ask to take the test, so bring the information with you. When I got my endorsement last year they not only didn't know what I was talking about, once they figured it out, they discovered they didnt have the test. So they copied the example test out of thier manual and I took it. they had the study booklet on the shelf but didn't have a clue. But then that's the DMV. As for the test, get the booklet read it cover to cover a couple times and take the test, believe me it is no big deal. Most of you can read the entire booklet in a bout 45 minutes, as for the rest of you .........well it may take longer.
The RV Endorsement is only for Fifth-Wheel Trailers with a GVWR over 10,000 Lbs. but under 15,000 Lbs. GVWR. Written test only
If you have a Tow Trailer with a GVWR of 10,000 or more, or a Fifth-wheel with a GVWR of 15,000 or more you will need a Non Commercial Class A license that does require a pre-trip inspection and driving skills test.
Keep in mind it's not how much the trailer weighs but what it's rated for (GVWR)
So if you are from out of state towing a 10K plus rig and get in an accident while passing thru... you don't get big doo doo like a resident does...
I love Kalifornia.
Glad my rig is only rated at 9960 gvwr...
5 years to retirement and I'm out of here!
I have a Calif class A license, and DMV just sent me a letter to remind me my medical card is up for renewal. In the letter they say if you have a fifth wheel travel trailer(no mention of weight). You must submit a medical examination form DL51, or a medical health questionnaire form DL 546.
If you operate a housecar in excess of 40 feet you must submit a medical examination form DL 51, or a physicians health report form DL 546A.
I do not know what I would do if the state was not protecting me from all you unhealthy drivers. As for me, as long as I can stand long enough, and see well enough to sign my credit card receipt I will be safe to drive for another two years.
