Finally built my hitch extension. Started out with a Ford V5 hitch rated at 5000lb tow and 500lb tongue, weight carrying. Added another 8" reciever tube with 4-1/4" by 1.5" straps. Then 100% welded all seems and also added corner gussets at cross tube and frame mounts. Also added 1/4" angle from lower receiver tube to cross tubes to stiffen. For the reciever I used 2-18" 2 inch solid square stock and 2-18" reciever tubes so I had 6" overlap on both ends making the receiver 24" long, it is joined together with 4- 3/16" straps and weighs 60lbs +. I have chains and turnbuckles attaching it to the frame mounts. The lowest safe work limit is on the turnbuckles at 1,800lbs each. All welds were done with a 6011 root and 7018 follow up with a DC stick welder.I modeled it after another popular double truss hitch. Now I can still use my torque lift tie downs with my stock receiver. The load in question has 230lbs tongue weight and weighs about 3,000lbs. Now I need to post pic's,I will try to figure it out. Initial tow test seems fine.

Hard to tell from your description but it sounds like you added a ton of iron to a V5 hitch cross tube. The cross tube is the first thing to fail in most receiver hitch failures. Sounds like you did add gussets to the cross tube so it might be tough. Putting 230# on the end of a 24" receiver extension is way more stress than a hitch cross tube designed to carry 500# of tongue weight can handle. A picture would probably show your design better than a description. The double truss sounds like it is plenty stout but if the tube that connects it to the frame breaks the truss will be in the ditch with the trailer. A hitch extension is only as strong as the weakest link.

I am looking forward to seeing your pics. I want to build my own extension for flat towing my Jeep.
