Sorry if this has been covered...I have looked a bit and haven't found anything so I'll give it a try. We have year and a half old golden retriever. He is our forth...we love the breed. One big problem that we have with him is his constantly barking and growling at dogs and people that pass our campsite. He is constantly on the alert even when in the trailer. It is very annoying and makes for an unpleasant camping experience. He is not a mean dog. He loves people..kids and other dogs. I think it may be an announcement to all that this is his territory. That being said it is driving us crazy. He continues even when the subject is gone. We have tried shaming, scolding and reasuring. He just keeps on doing it. I am wondering about a shock collar but I have heard not to use it on a dog in this situation...such as a protective thing. I think that's what he is doing, I don't know. He does this at home too.Any suggestions. Thanks Sue

Our border collie behaved like yours the first couple trips but as we acclimated him to crowds and other dogs he began to mellow.
We took him with us to Wal-mart and other places with activity so that he would become more accustomed to people and activity as we live in a rural area without neighbors.
Hope your buddy responds cause i too find unnecessary barking irritating also.

He is just being protective of his area, does he do it if people enter the campsite or only when people are walking by? Try to see if you can get some people or friends with dogs to enter the site can see how he reacts, if he jumps and trys to attack then you know that he is just protecting you and that he is out of his element. But remember, dont comfort him when he does it cuz it just makes him think that he is doing the right thing. Let him know by your body action and tone of voice that he isnt doing the right thing, he will learn and eventually come around, wether he likes it or not.

My wife is a certified dog trainer, so send me a PM if you need more help and info.

does he know what the word no means, when we had our chow and she did that we would tell her NO if she still did it and wasnt paying attention to me i used a squirt gun or a empty can with pennys in it and shook it to get her attenion and sternly told her NO after awhile she knew when it was alright to bark and carry on or not,if i did not tell her no she knew it was ok to do what she was doing. i would reward her when she behaved the way i wanted her to.it didnt take her long to learn but you have to stick with it.

Read the thread from last week from Kokosfriend on barking dog, lots of good advice and she's getting her barking dog problem solved.
Getting rid of the dog is not an option for something like this, you obviously love this dog and want to solve the problem.
Time and patience and training will result in a well behaved dog.
Personally I'll use my vinegar spray everytime and nip it in the bud.

When I was a kid, we had a barking dog. Barked all the time at anything. When he barked, we went outside and injected Tobasco sauce in his mouth with a syringe (no needle of course). Then we'd leave him with his bucket of water. We did this every time he barked, and after a few days he was done. Worked for our dog.

On the other hand, Rvndave's idea is 100% guaranteed to work.

Have you ever watched a show on Animal Planet with Victoria Stilwell?
It's called "It's me or the dog." She teaches a command for QUIET and then gives the barking felon a goodie every time he obeys. usually its a small piece of chicken, something that your dog LOVES!
It can be used along with a clicker. Clicker training is very popular. This can be taught at home and used anywhere. I am all for positive reinforcement when training your pets.

Sue,

The first camping season with our 3 year old Boston was interesting. We used the same trick (and treats) we used at home.

When he would bark loudly to warn about his territory, we would say "no bark" (firmly) and get his attention. When he stopped barking, he got the treat.

It took practice at home, but after awhile he caught on.

This works in the campsite, too. He is 99% gentleman now. No barking.

Keep reading and asking questions of trainers -- you'll get there!

You've already gotten some great advice regarding redirecting the dog or teaching him some type of quiet/no bark command.

The only thing I will add is that I do not use the word "No" as any part of a command. It's such an over-used word that it's totally lost it's meaning for most dogs. Dogs hear us say it to them and other humans all day long, week in and week out. I've had much better luck in using a sound, such as "aaaak" to mean no.

I'm not a huge fan of bark collars, but I do think there are a very few situations where their use is justified. And this very well may be one of them. I do not think there's anything special about this situation that would rule out the use of a bark collar. If you decide to go that route, make sure you get a very good collar with multiple sensitivity adjustments, and start on the lowest. TriTronics and Dogtra are spendy, but much better than cheaper brands.

Training and obediance is the key. We started training ours at a very young age. Barking resulted in a swift smack on the nose followed by a command such as QUIET or STOP.
