Ok, I am getting ready to purchase surge protection for our TT. We have a Rockwood 8313SS. I am looking at the Progressive Indurstries portable 30amp or the Surge Guard 30A portable 34730. I have looked over the details of each and all that electrical wording looks good and sounds good but for someone like me who just wants to make sure my TT is protected not sure if one if better or they are about the same.

I can get the Surge Guard locally for about $50.00 less than the Progressive as I have to order it.

Which one?

I've just ordered the Progressive HW 30C. I'll be doing a permanent hard-wired installation in the open area behind my breaker panel.

I went this route because I don't want to worry about theft or accidentally leaving an expensive piece of gear behind plus I won't have to worry about where to store yet another piece of "setting up / tearing down camp" equipment.

I also like the remote panel with the HW30C, but then again I'm an electrical engineer and like toys!

Your mileage may vary ...

Other then a lightning strike you will never see a voltage spike in a CG. You should be more concerned with low voltage or a brown out condition in a CG more then 15+ years old. Older CG’s were not set up to supply the electrical needs of modern RV’s and with most Campers having the attitude of I’ll run my AC full blast with the thermostat set to 72* and my frige on AC the CG’s power grid can not supply enough voltage and then anything that you have running off shore power will be damaged.

If it were me I would invest it a good (GOOD!) voltage meter like a Fluke with a low voltage alarm to monitor the voltage coming into your RV and not worry about a spike, I have never seen one nor has my Father in all the years we have been camping (Dad stated in the early 60’s).

BTW were did you find a SG 30A for 50 bucks they list for $338.59! If you can get one for $50 new i would buy it!

No it is not $50.00 for the unit, it is $50.00 less than the cost of the Progressive.

Sorry for the confusion.

I have the Surge Guard wired in permanently and like the peace of mind it gives from surges and mostly low voltage. I disagree with a previous poster about no surges, they can happen at a CG as well as the stick house. Like I said low voltage is probably your biggest and most common problem. The Surge Guard will cut off power if it drops below 102 volts or goes over 132 volts + you get surge protection.

Yes tvman44 you can get a surge in a CG not saying you can’t but in all the years I have been camping I have never seen one, that doesn’t mean I won’t get bit in the butt though. Here is a copy of what the manufacturer has on their web site for the SG 30Amp.

30A PORTABLE SURGE GUARD - View Items
Automatically shuts off the power when excessive voltage, Low (132V), or open neutral is present. Automatic reset on power restoration. Caution indicator light indicates miswired pedestal, reverse polarity and elevated ground voltage. 2 minute 15 second reset delay protects A/C compressor. Weather resistant. Convenient plug handles. 10/3 AWG cord. Offers 1,050 Joules of surge protection.

Nowhere does it say anything about low voltage protection. As I said you WILL find low voltage in every CG older then 15 years when they are at capacity. If our fellow campers would set their AC to 78* and use a fan to move the air around and also set their frigid and hot water to propane this would be less of a problem. But then most have the attitude that they paid for the electricity in their fees so they can use as much as they like. Take a walk thru any CG during the day and see how many campers have there AC running along with there scare lights left on. OK rant over

Don

If it does protect against low voltage also then it would be worth the investment, as most damage to RV equipment is do to low voltage and not high voltage. That is why your AC and refrigerator Manufacturers will check all failed units for low/high voltage before they authorize a replacement under warranty. My dealer gives a volt meter with every sale that plugs into any outlet to keep an eye on incoming voltage. They told me that almost all electrical equipment failures are from low voltage and not high voltage.

I just bought the portable 30 amp SurgeGuard and lock hasp. After setting it up, I'm wondering if I wouldn't have been better off with the hard-wired version of the SurgeGuard ... the lock hasp really isn't much of a theft deterrent.

Another vote for Progressive Industries - HW 30 Amp. Very easy to install .. much easier than worrying about a portable.
